The University of Maryland, College Park, a prestigious and renowned public research university, is seeking an experienced Food Service Shift Manager to join its VPSA-DS-Denton Dining Room department. Established with a commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement, the University provides a dynamic environment that fosters professional growth and innovation. The institution is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within its workforce and welcomes applicants who contribute to this mission. This position is categorized as staff regular, offering a competitive salary range of $60,040 to $72,048 annually along with various benefits.
The role of Food Service Shift Manager is vital within the University’s food service operations. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director, the manager is responsible for overseeing all shift management functions across multiple food service stations within the dining facilities. The incumbent supports the Assistant Director in all aspects of unit management, ensuring smooth and efficient operations aligned with the institution’s high standards. This position demands a versatile leader capable of managing diverse teams, coordinating food service activities, and maintaining compliance with health and safety standards.
The Food Service Shift Manager will play a critical role in driving quality guest service while managing back-of-house and front-of-house operations. The ideal candidate is expected to bring a strong knowledge of institutional food service practices, food safety protocols, including HACCP guidelines, and possess the ability to adapt to varying operational demands such as variable work schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and special event days. Physical endurance is also essential, as the role requires standing, walking, lifting up to 75 pounds occasionally, and working under a range of temperature and environmental conditions.
Moreover, the role involves significant responsibilities in budget management, ordering, and inventory control, utilizing food service software systems like POS, inventory management, and scheduling platforms. Effective communication and organizational skills are critical for fostering a productive work environment, leading diverse teams, and ensuring compliance with departmental, university, state, and federal policies. Preference will be given to candidates holding certifications such as ADA or Food Management Professional (FMP) certifications and those who demonstrate exemplary leadership, hospitality, and food production skills.
This position is also crucial in maintaining the University’s commitment to sustainability and best environmental practices in food service. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of delivering outstanding guest experiences and will be proficient in planning, production, cooking, menu development, and food service marketing. The Food Service Shift Manager is expected to be a hands-on leader who can motivate staff across multiple locations, ensuring seamless service quality and operational efficiency.
In addition to competitive compensation, the University of Maryland offers a supportive professional atmosphere with opportunities for ongoing development. The institution adheres to strict non-smoking policies on campus and emphasizes a culture of safety, inclusivity, and professionalism. Employment offers are contingent upon successful background checks and the ability to meet employment eligibility verification requirements. The University is committed to equal opportunity employment, welcoming qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds.
