The Food Service Manager position at Hy-Vee is a key leadership role within the Market Grille department. This exempt-level role is responsible for providing prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service while assisting department managers in delivering the freshest and highest quality food products to customers. The manager oversees several food service departments including Chinese, Italian, Restaurant, and Kitchen, ensuring food quality, presentation, inventory management, and staff scheduling are handled effectively. They work closely with chefs to plan menus, estimate food costs, and ensure efficient purchasing and provisioning of supplies. This role demands strong leadership skills since the Food Service Manager directly supervises Market Grille department managers, service managers, chefs, and food service staff.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of related experience
  • Ability to perform medium physical work involving lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Willingness to adhere to food safety and sanitation protocols
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and potentially noisy environment
  • Must be punctual and reliable
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner
  • Makes an effort to learn customers' names and address them by name
  • Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach products, loading/unloading heavy items, passing along customer suggestions
  • Answers telephone promptly and provides friendly service including taking product orders
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Reviews daily production list with department employees and assigns tasks
  • Ensures food display case product rotation and replenishment
  • Scans kitchen area for needed tasks and assigns to kitchen staff
  • Ensures proper staffing for customer needs
  • Oversees food quality and presentation in Chinese, Italian, Restaurant and Kitchen departments
  • Oversees inventory management
  • Plans menus with chefs
  • Manages provisioning and purchasing of supplies
  • Estimates food and beverage costs
  • Supervises portion control and preparation quantities
  • Performs frequent quality and service checks
  • Sets standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, and profitability
  • Analyzes sales and trends, prepares ad projections and writes ads
  • Plans marketing, advertising and special restaurant functions
  • Monitors health and safety and liquor regulation compliance
  • Investigates and resolves food quality and service complaints
  • Arranges maintenance and repairs
  • Selects and prices menu items
  • Directs hiring, training and scheduling of personnel
  • Enforces sanitary practices
  • Handles customer issues
  • Ensures compliance with sanitation and hygiene practices
  • Adheres to company policies and reports to work on time
  • Assumes supervisory duties in absence of Department Manager or Assistant
  • Assists in other store areas as needed
  • Ensures competitive pricing
  • Performs other related duties and special projects
