The Food Service Manager position within the Market Grille at Hy-Vee is a critical leadership role designed to ensure the delivery of prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service. This exempt role requires a dedicated professional responsible for assisting food service department managers in presenting the freshest, most innovative, and highest quality food products at competitive retail prices. The Food Service Manager oversees multiple departments including Chinese, Italian, Restaurant, and Kitchen departments, and is accountable for food quality, inventory management, and staff supervision.

This role emphasizes a customer-focused approach, requiring the manager to engage actively with customers, learn their names, and address them personally to build a welcoming atmosphere. A key aspect of the position involves coordinating with chefs and kitchen personnel to plan menus, manage food and beverage costs, and ensure efficient procurement of supplies. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of similar or related experience
  • Completion or willingness to complete sanitation (food safety) courses encouraged
  • Ability to perform medium work involving physical exertion up to 50 pounds
  • Capable of performing physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Ability to adhere to company policies and guidelines
  • Must report to work on time and as scheduled
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to cool, damp, noisy conditions and cleaning chemicals

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Learn customers' names and address them personally
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing items out of reach, loading/unloading heavy items, and passing customer suggestions
  • Answer telephone calls and take product orders
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Review daily production lists and assign tasks
  • Ensure food display case products are rotated and replenished
  • Monitor kitchen cleanliness, repairs, and safety
  • Ensure adequate kitchen staffing
  • Oversee food quality and presentation
  • Manage inventory across multiple food departments
  • Collaborate with chefs on menu planning and supply purchasing
  • Estimate food and beverage costs
  • Supervise portion control to minimize waste
  • Perform quality checks
  • Set department standards for service, cleanliness, appearance and profitability
  • Analyze sales and prepare advertisements
  • Plan marketing and special functions
  • Monitor compliance with health, safety and liquor regulations
  • Investigate and resolve food quality and service complaints
  • Arrange maintenance and repairs
  • Select and price menu items
  • Direct hiring, training and scheduling food service personnel
  • Enforce sanitary food handling and cleanliness practices
  • Follow food safety guidelines
  • Handle customer issues promptly
  • Maintain personal hygiene and adhere to company policies
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled
  • Assume supervisory duties in absence of department manager
  • Assist in other store areas as needed
  • Ensure competitive pricing
  • Perform job-related duties and special projects as required
