Job Description

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is a vital state agency dedicated to providing outstanding care and services to Pennsylvania’s military veterans. One of the key facilities under this department is the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, which serves as a premier residential healthcare institution for veterans. The Home is committed to honoring those who have served our country by delivering high-quality healthcare, comfort, and support in a respectful and mission-driven environment. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is well-known for its dedication to the welfare of veterans, operating with integrity, compassion, and excellence to meet the unique needs of this esteemed population.

The Department is currently seeking a full-time Food Service Manager to join the dietary department at the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home. This role is entrusted with managing all aspects of food service operations within a healthcare setting, ensuring that residents receive nutritious, appealing, and safe meals daily. The position requires the Food Service Manager to not only oversee but also actively participate in food preparation and service, maintaining the highest standards in food quality and safety. The manager will be responsible for ordering, receiving, and inventory control of food items to guarantee compliance with quality standards, including inspection and verification of deliveries. Further duties include menu preparation, portion determination, plating, and food handling practices tailored to special diet needs, with close attention to detail regarding portion size, food safety, and efficiency.

This role involves supervisory responsibilities such as coordinating staff activities, scheduling, and providing training for food service personnel through orientation, on-the-job instruction, and in-service training programs. The Food Service Manager ensures the delivery of meals at proper temperatures and consistent quality, fostering a positive dining experience for the residents. The position operates during the first shift, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break, totaling 37.5 hours per week. This is an in-person role without telework options, reflecting the importance of hands-on management and immediate oversight in a healthcare dining environment.

The Food Service Manager role is ideal for candidates with at least one year of supervisory experience in preparing special diet menus within institutional food service operations such as schools, hospitals, or nursing homes, complemented by a bachelor’s degree in foods, nutrition, dietetics, food service, institutional management, or a related field. Alternatively, the position welcomes an equivalent combination of experience and training. Meeting essential job functions is critical, and employment is contingent upon a medical examination along with mandatory clearances under the Older Adult Protective Services Act, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs offers a competitive total rewards package comprising health, dental, vision coverage, wellness programs, competitive wages, multiple retirement and investment plans, and generous paid leave including vacation, sick leave, parental and military leave. The work environment fosters professional growth, internal mobility, and community engagement through charitable giving opportunities. The department values diversity, equity, and inclusion, supporting a workplace culture that respects individual differences and encourages employees to contribute meaningfully to the mission of serving Pennsylvania’s veterans. This position provides a meaningful career path for those passionate about food service excellence and dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of veterans.
