Job Description
The University of California, Berkeley, is a prestigious institution renowned for its academic excellence, innovative research, and commitment to diversity and social justice. Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley has a rich history of fostering an inclusive environment that values openness, freedom, and belonging among its diverse student body, faculty, and staff. The university emphasizes the importance of equity-focused education and social justice, making it a distinguished place for learning and professional growth. Berkeley also supports its employees through various resource groups and professional development opportunities, aiming to empower every staff member to reach their full potential. Full-time staff members at Berkeley are provided with at least 80 hours of paid time annually dedicated to professional development, reinforcing the university's commitment to continuous learning and career advancement.
Berkeley Dining operates under the Division of Student Affairs within the Residential Student Services Programs and is a self-operated dining program that prioritizes culinary excellence, social responsibility, and supporting the living/learning environment of its customers. Serving more than 12,000 meal plan holders, Berkeley Dining delivers over 5 million meals yearly across 14 diverse facilities. These include residential all-you-care-to-eat dining halls, retail a la carte options, stadium concessions, training tables, early childhood education meal production, and catering services. Operating seven days a week for seventeen hours daily, the program employs around 450 full and part-time staff members alongside approximately 400 student workers. Berkeley Dining's commitment extends beyond food service to creating an engaging and supportive atmosphere for the campus community.
The Food Service Manager at Berkeley Dining plays a pivotal role in managing daily dining and food service operations collaboratively with chefs and the management team. This position ensures the efficient and safe preparation, service, and presentation of food, beverages, and merchandise while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene across dining facilities. The manager provides direct leadership to food service staff, guaranteeing outstanding customer service, compliance with policies, and operational excellence. Responsibilities span overseeing kitchen operations, retail stands, cafes, beverage stations, and catering service areas, ensuring adherence to food safety regulations like HACCP, and managing staffing in response to service volume fluctuations.
Moreover, the role involves assisting in auditing food preparation for quality assurance, implementing loss prevention strategies, and maintaining equipment and facility upkeep in coordination with preventative maintenance schedules. Financial accountability is a key component, with the manager ensuring compliance with cash handling policies, overseeing payment procedures, and maintaining accurate documentation. Customer engagement is encouraged through supporting special events and pop-up activities, resolving inquiries related to meal plans and refunds, and working collaboratively with student teams.
Supervisory duties focus on staff training, performance evaluation, attendance monitoring, and fostering a positive workplace atmosphere that aligns with labor laws and union contracts. The manager serves as an essential communication link within the department, conducts safety briefings, and facilitates professional development opportunities. Administrative responsibilities include cash handling training, payroll coordination, maintaining service and employee records, and supporting recruitment and interviewing efforts.
Additional duties may require operating campus vehicles for transporting materials and supporting vehicle maintenance tasks, demonstrating the role's dynamic nature. The Food Service Manager position demands flexibility in working hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet operational needs.
This is a full-time, exempt, monthly-paid career position with an annual salary range of $64,000 to $70,500, eligible for University of California benefits. The ideal candidate must exhibit a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) principles through daily work interactions. The position requires strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and a dedication to maintaining high food safety standards, contributing to the overall excellence of Berkeley Dining and its mission to serve the campus community with integrity and quality.
