Job Description
UC San Diego is a renowned public research university located in La Jolla, California. It is recognized for its strong commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and fostering a diverse and inclusive community. UC San Diego offers a wide array of educational and research opportunities, making it a leader in higher education and community service. The university prioritizes creating an environment where students, faculty, and staff feel valued and supported.
The Residential, Retail, and Supply Chain Services (RRSS) department at UC San Diego plays a critical role in supporting the university's operations through its diverse service units. These include Housing, Dining and Hospitality (HDH), Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions (IPPS), the UC San Diego Bookstore, Triton Print & Digital Media, and the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC). Together, they provide comprehensive services that meet the needs of over 20,000 students, faculty, staff, and their families. This department focuses on innovation, customer satisfaction, and fostering a sense of community belonging.
Within RRSS, the Housing, Dining, and Hospitality unit is a self-funded operation with a staff population exceeding 1,200 employees and a student workforce of over 2,000. With an annual operating budget of $371 million, HDH is responsible for delivering high-quality housing and dining services. The unit offers competitive pay and provides excellent benefits, including retirement plans, personal and professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment. Benefits begin on the first day of employment, and dining positions include a daily meal allowance. UC San Diego values employees who bring diverse perspectives and skills, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
The Food Service Manager role is a full-time, career appointment position that offers a competitive salary range from $62,000 to $72,000 annually. As a Food Service Manager, you will oversee the operations of a restaurant, market, catering unit, functional area of a larger dining unit, or food truck within the Housing Dining Hospitality system. Your responsibilities will encompass organizing and planning daily activities, staffing and training personnel, implementing computerized systems, maintaining equipment and inventory, ensuring food safety and sanitation compliance, and assisting with budgeting and financial management.
This position requires an individual who can handle predetermined work assignments with moderate supervision and carry out these duties using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. You will lead direct reports, ensuring they complete their assignments effectively and in compliance with the department's standards. The role demands a hands-on approach to managing food service operations, including attention to detail in cash control, inventory forecasting, recipe management, and point-of-sale systems. Additionally, you will need strong interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively within the team and across departments.
UC San Diego offers an enriching work environment where your contributions have a direct impact on the campus community's daily life. This position also requires adherence to specific regulations such as mandatory background checks and health codes, along with flexible work scheduling to accommodate variable shifts, including weekends and extended hours. As a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act, immediate reporting of any suspected abuse is a critical part of the role.
Joining UC San Diego means becoming part of a supportive, inclusive culture that values integrity, excellence, and respect. The university is committed to equal opportunity and prohibits discrimination in any form, fostering a smoke and tobacco-free campus environment. This role presents an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking to advance their careers in food service management within a vibrant, mission-driven organization dedicated to serving its diverse academic community.
