Job Description

Rickards Middle School, located in Oakland Park, Florida, is part of the Broward County Public Schools system, renowned for its commitment to providing high-quality education and a supportive learning environment. As a significant institution within this district, Rickards Middle School focuses on fostering academic achievement and personal growth for its students. The school's mission is not only to educate but also to ensure a safe and nurturing atmosphere that supports all facets of student development. It is within this environment that the Food Service General Worker plays an essential role in sustaining the health and well-being of the student body through nutritious meal preparation and service.

The Food Service General Worker position at Rickards Middle is a nonexempt, part-time role with an hourly rate of $15.84 and a daily work schedule of 5.5 hours. The primary goal of this position is to perform skilled tasks related to the preparation and service of nutritionally adequate, reimbursable meals that comply with federal and state guidelines. The role involves adhering to scheduled production deadlines while ensuring the quality and safety of all food products served. This individual is expected to participate proactively in ongoing state-approved training programs to enhance their knowledge in areas such as school food service foundations, nutrition, quantity cooking, and sanitation.

The role demands a strong commitment to customer service, professionalism, and excellent communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, school staff, and the general public. Operating point-of-sale systems in compliance with federal regulations forms part of the job responsibilities. Furthermore, the role requires strict adherence to food safety protocols, departmental procedures, and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) to maintain a safe work environment.

The Food Service General Worker undertakes various kitchen duties such as pre-preparation, food production, service, backup support, cleanup, and inventory check-ins. Duties also include assisting with meal service timing and quality, ordering supplies, and proper storage management. Precise record-keeping for food preparation, including adherence to written recipes and production worksheet documentation, is essential. The role involves the safe operation of all food service equipment, maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation in the work environment, and ensuring compliance with personal hygiene standards.

An additional responsibility is driving vans or refrigerated/freezer trucks to satellite sites for food delivery, which requires maintaining the vehicles' cleanliness and fueling. Beyond technical food service skills, the worker contributes to the broader mission of the Broward County School Board by promoting equal employment opportunities and avoiding discrimination in all activities.

Physically, the role is classified as medium work, requiring the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and perform regular lifting tasks up to 30 pounds. The worker must be physically capable of maintaining the kitchen’s sanitary conditions, including waste disposal and equipment cleaning tasks that do not involve climbing.

This position offers an opportunity for individuals passionate about contributing to school nutrition programs and student wellness. By joining the Food and Nutrition Services team at Rickards Middle School, employees support a vital aspect of student life that directly impacts learning and development. New hires will start at the minimum salary of the assigned pay grade SF1121, with a work calendar aligning with the school year of 192 days. Overall, this role is integral to ensuring that students receive safe, delicious, and healthy meals that support their academic success and overall well-being.
