The role of Food Service General Worker at Lake Forest Elementary is an essential position within the Food and Nutrition Services department. This position plays a pivotal role in the preparation and service of nutritious, reimbursable meals that comply with established standards and deadlines. The Food Service General Worker is responsible not only for ensuring that quality food products are prepared and served safely but also for maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment. The role includes engaging in ongoing state-approved training programs to enhance skills and ensure knowledge is current with latest practices in nutrition, food safety, and sanitation.

This is a nonexempt, part-time position offering approximately 6 hours of work per day and a competitive hourly wage of $15.84. The Food Service General Worker will engage in varied tasks including food production, meal service, operating point-of-sale systems, and ensuring compliance with the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines. Other duties incorporate inventory management, cleaning, equipment operation, and even driving refrigerated/freezer trucks to different sites as needed.

The position demands strong interpersonal skills, as the worker will regularly interact with students, faculty, and other staff, providing excellent customer service while communicating professionally and effectively with all stakeholders. Physical demands include the ability to lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally and performing tasks requiring medium physical exertion. The successful candidate will contribute to creating an inviting meal environment that supports student achievement and sustains the school’s commitment to excellence in food services.

Job Duties

  • Follow daily work schedules for food production, service, and cleaning
  • participate in ongoing state-approved training and educational initiatives relating to Food and Nutrition Services
  • demonstrate and promote exceptional customer service, using good judgment, and professionalism when interacting with the general public, students, parents, and staff
  • operate point-of-sale systems according to federal guidelines
  • adhere to food safety rules, departmental procedures, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
  • perform kitchen duties including pre-preparation, food production, service, backup, clean-up, and check-in orders
  • assist in ensuring meal service is safe and food quality meets approved meal patterns
  • assist with ordering, proper storage, and inventories for supplies and food items
  • follow written recipes and record production data accurately
  • operate food service equipment safely
  • maintain a clean work environment by disposing of waste properly
  • ensure sanitation practices and personal hygiene standards are followed
  • perform cleaning of food service equipment and facilities
  • drive vans and refrigerated/freezer trucks for food delivery as directed
  • perform and promote compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies
  • participate in training programs to enhance job skills
  • review current developments and technical information related to job responsibilities
  • ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures
  • follow federal and state laws and School Board policies
