Job Description
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is a renowned educational facility and museum dedicated to space exploration and technology. Located in Huntsville, Alabama, this establishment serves as a premier destination for space enthusiasts, tourists, and learners of all ages. As one of the most respected space museums in the United States, the Center offers interactive exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs related to rocketry, astronautics, and the history of space flight. The museum not only preserves and showcases space history but also provides inspiring experiences that educate, entertain, and motivate visitors and camp participants alike, fostering an appreciation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
This particular job opening is for a part-time Food Service position at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The role offers a competitive hourly wage of $18.00 along with several valuable benefits such as paid time off and free museum passes and discounts, which enhance employee experience at the facility. The purpose of this role is to ensure the accurate, timely, and proper preparation of food in sufficient quantities to serve daily guests and camp participants effectively.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in maintaining high standards of food preparation and service within the museum's Food Service Department. Key responsibilities include adhering to regulatory and professional standards for cleanliness and sanitation, ensuring a courteous and professional interaction with all guests, trainees, and employees, and managing timely setup and breakdown of kitchen areas. The food preparation tasks will involve working stations like the grill, fry station, and serving line, following established recipes to ensure consistency. The position also entails recording food production and waste consistently to maintain operational efficiency.
The Food Service role at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center demands a high level of skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Employees in this role must be capable of handling multiple tasks, maintaining sanitation standards, and delivering excellent customer service. The position involves physical activity such as standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and moving through different areas of the kitchen and food service environment.
This job requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and candidates with culinary or college experience or equivalent are preferred. The ideal applicant will have 1-2 years of experience in cooking and food preparation within a restaurant or similar food service setting. Proficiency with kitchen equipment such as fryers and grills and competency in food preparation techniques are essential. Additionally, candidates must hold a ServSafe certification or equivalent knowledge of sanitation standards and food safety, and they must demonstrate strong knife skills. On-the-job training is provided to support new employees.
The work environment includes exposure to various temperature conditions—hot ovens and grills, as well as cold refrigerators and freezers. Employees must adhere to safety protocols due to wet or slippery surfaces, loud noise levels, and confined workspaces. Communication with supervisors, co-workers, and guests is an integral part of this role, requiring strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
Availability for day, evening, and weekend shifts is necessary to meet the operational needs of the Center. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is committed to equal employment opportunity, welcoming applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status. This position is essential for delivering quality food services that complement the educational mission of the Center and enhance visitor satisfaction.
