Job Description
Buffalo City Mission is a faith-driven organization based in Buffalo, NY, dedicated to transforming lives and restoring hope for individuals and families facing homelessness and other barriers to stability. Established as a community united by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Mission provides not only shelter but comprehensive support services aimed at rebuilding lives with dignity and purpose. The organization is widely recognized for its compassionate approach, holistic care philosophy, and deep commitment to serving men, women, and families in need throughout the region. Beyond providing essential services, Buffalo City Mission cultivates a work environment where faith inspires action and where every team member plays a crucial role in making a lasting impact on the community. The Mission continues to expand its outreach and programs, leveraging partnerships, donations, and volunteer efforts to meet growing needs with grace and efficiency.
The Food Service Attendant/Cook role at Buffalo City Mission is an essential position designed to support the mission’s goals through food service operations at the women’s shelter. This position is available on a part-time, temporary basis with competitive pay ranging between $16.00 and $17.00 per hour. The schedule varies, with shifts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 PM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 7 AM to 5 PM. Alternatively, there is opportunity for full-time permanent hours, Tuesday through Saturday, with flexible working hours between 6 AM and 6 PM.
In this role, the incumbent will manage kitchen operations including food preparation, cooking, and cleanup, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for those served by the Mission. The attendant/cook will supervise other kitchen staff including attendants, cooks, stewarding personnel, volunteers, and specialty department coordinators. This leadership capacity demands proven supervisory skills, coordination of menu planning, and the implementation of donated resources to create nutritious and balanced meals consistent with health and safety standards. Communication with vendors and donation providers is a key aspect of the role, facilitating the timely receipt of supplies and the maximization of resources.
The position requires strong accountability and adherence to policy and procedures to maintain a kitchen environment that is efficient, compliant with safety protocols, and prepared for inspections. This includes following Food Safety standards like FIFO (First In, First Out), proper storage practices, rapid cooling and reheating techniques, and inspection of food items to ensure high quality. The Food Service Attendant/Cook is responsible for maintaining kitchen equipment, overseeing repairs and maintenance as needed, and accurately keeping records of temperature logs and meal counts. Working in this role provides an opportunity to contribute directly to a mission that values faith and service above all, making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable populations every day.
