The Food Service Assistant II position at Bakersfield College’s Panorama Campus is a temporary, classified short-term role designed to support the Food Services Department in maintaining high standards of food preparation, service, and safety. This position is limited to 960 hours or 175 working days per year and offers an annual salary range of $36,463.80 to $50,714.52. Under the supervision of an assigned supervisor, the Food Service Assistant II will be responsible for preparing and serving both hot and cold menu items to students and staff, operating food service equipment and cash registers, performing cashiering duties, and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen and dining areas.

This role is distinguished by its increased responsibility compared to entry-level food service positions, encompassing a broader scope of food service preparation duties as well as leadership functions such as training and assigning work to student assistants and other staff. Food Service Assistant I positions perform routine activities, while Food Service Assistant III positions take on additional cashiering and cash management responsibilities. The Food Service Assistant II serves as a critical bridge within the team, ensuring that food service operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

Additional responsibilities include preparing hot and cold beverages, assembling sandwiches and salads, managing food supplies inventory, performing general cleaning duties, and assisting with food service at special events. The role requires vigilant adherence to safety, sanitation, and temperature control standards, as well as the ability to operate various food service machinery. The position demands strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to train and supervise others effectively.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Prepare and serve hot and cold menu items to students and staff at an assigned school
  • observe quality and quantity of food served according to established procedures
  • assure proper temperature of foods
  • assure compliance with safety and sanitation regulations
  • prepare hot and cold beverages including coffee, tea and juice
  • prepare frozen foods from freezer
  • fry and serve frozen foods including burritos, fries and onion rings
  • cut carrots, celery and other vegetables as required
  • prepare and assemble sandwiches, meats, fruit, vegetables, dressings, salads and other food items as assigned
  • set-up, count, stock and serve milk
  • check expiration dates and discard containers as needed
  • monitor temperature of freezers and refrigerators
  • clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers and other food service equipment and areas
  • assist with washing and drying dishes and utensils as needed
  • perform general cleaning duties such as mopping, sweeping, emptying trash receptacles, monitor and replenish stock levels of condiments, utensils and dishes
  • set up staff dining area
  • estimate food and supplies needed for operation
  • stock food supplies according to established procedures
  • assist with the storage of food supplies and leftover items
  • assist with periodic inventories as assigned
  • maintain related records
  • operate a variety of equipment and machines used in a school cafeteria
  • operate a cash register
  • perform cashiering duties
  • maintain records of meals and beverages served and monies collected
  • train new food service employees and student workers as assigned
  • assist with food preparation and service at special events as assigned
