In line with its commitment to fostering a healthy environment for students and staff, Stockton Unified School District is currently hiring for the position of Food Service Assistant. This essential role involves assisting in the preparation and serving of hot and cold meals to students and staff at various district locations including satellite sites, elementary schools, comprehensive high schools, and central kitchens that may serve as transport hubs. The Food Service Assistant position is an entry-level role that focuses on maintaining food service facilities, ensuring sanitary conditions for equipment and utensils, and supporting the food service operations team in daily tasks. Responsibilities for this role include assembling ingredients, packaging meals, serving on serving lines, cleaning food service areas, operating kitchen equipment, and performing cashiering duties using point of sale (POS) systems. Employees in this position will also assist in fulfilling special dietary requirements, manage inventory, and participate in trainings to uphold the district's high service standards. Job Requirements
- Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent
- six months of experience in quantity food preparation or service
- valid California Food Handlers Permit
- First Aid and CPR certificates must be obtained within sixty days from date of hire
- ability to stand for extended periods of time
- ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs to waist height for short distances
- ability to push or pull up to 75 lbs for short distances
- ability to see, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively
- ability to use dexterity of hands and fingers to operate food service equipment
- ability to reach overhead, above shoulders and horizontally
- ability to meet physical demands and requirements of the position
- adherence to dress code requiring closed toe shoes
Job Qualifications
- Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent
- any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to six months of experience in quantity food preparation or service
- completion of course and passing exam for California Food Handlers Permit within three months after appointment
- must maintain a valid food handler card
- knowledge of basic quantity food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food items and ingredients
- knowledge of sanitation and safety practices related to preparing, handling, and serving food
- knowledge of standard kitchen utensils and equipment
- interpersonal communication skills using tact, patience and courtesy
- proper lifting techniques
- basic math and cashiering skills
- oral and written communication skills
- basic record-keeping techniques
- ability to prepare and serve hot and cold menu items
- ability to assist with cooking and baking various food items
- ability to clean, sanitize, and maintain food service equipment and facilities
- ability to operate standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently

Job Duties
- Assist in the quantity preparation and serving of hot and cold foods to students and staff
- maintain food service facilities, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition
- clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers, and other food service equipment
- sweep and mop floors to assure safety
- operate a dishwasher and manually wash trays, pots, pans, and serving equipment and utensils
- prepare food and beverages for sale
- count and set up plates, trays, and utensils
- stock condiments, food items, and paper goods
- assist in preparing foods for special needs diets
- assist in the receipt, storage and rotation of food items and supplies
- assist with meal counts and inventories
- prepare orders for food and supplies
- train and provide guidance to other food service professionals
- operate food service equipment such as ovens, warmers, slicers, packaging equipment, can openers, and carts
- operate a computer and perform cashiering and POS duties such as taking meal counts, collecting money and tickets, and providing correct change
- complete and maintain records such as production records, transport records, meal counts, and sales reports
- communicate with students, staff, and parents to exchange information
- attend assigned trainings in district
- maintain regular and prompt attendance in the workplace
- perform related duties as assigned
