Job Description

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is renowned for its commitment to transforming the health care experience and providing access to exceptional health care services in America’s heartland. With a vast network of facilities and professionals dedicated to serving rural communities, Sanford Health has established itself as a leader in offering quality and accessible medical care to diverse populations. Their mission is to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care that meets the unique needs of individuals and families in rural environments, ensuring that geographic location does not limit access to world-class health services. Sanford Health embraces innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to maintain high standards of health care and to support the well-being of the communities it serves.

This particular role is for a Food Service Assistant within Sanford Health, a position that plays a vital part in the health system’s broader mission by ensuring the quality and safety of food services provided to patients, visitors, and staff. This role is full-time with flexible scheduling options in a fast-paced work environment, primarily working from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, including every fourth weekend and every other holiday. The compensation range for this position is between $15.00 and $22.50 per hour, reflecting the responsibility and skill needed to maintain food service standards in a healthcare setting.

The Food Service Assistant is tasked with various responsibilities related to food preparation, service, and safety. This position demands meticulous attention to detail to monitor and record proper food temperatures, set up serving areas in a sanitized and orderly manner, and prepare and serve food items adhering to safety guidelines. The assistant ensures food areas remain stocked and clean, including the maintenance and sanitizing of equipment such as grills, beverage machines, toasters, ice cream dispensers, steam equipment, dishwashers, and refrigeration units. A key part of the role involves operating computerized cash registers for processing food and beverage payments, which requires accuracy and customer service skills.

Beyond technical duties, the Food Service Assistant is expected to comply fully with Hazardous Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines to ensure food safety and quality control. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for effective interactions with patrons and co-workers, facilitating a supportive and cooperative workplace culture. The role may also involve walking long distances and being on one's feet for most of the day, demanding physical stamina alongside mental focus.

Candidates ideally have prior experience in the food industry and customer service, demonstrating the ability to work independently when required. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation processes is crucial to succeed in this role. Training is provided on the job, and depending on the location, certification such as Serv Safe or Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required within a set timeframe. Sanford Health fosters an inclusive work environment and is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to diversity and accommodation. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply and can request assistance with the application process.
