Job Description

Central Synagogue is one of the most prominent and largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States, situated in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Established with a rich history dating back over 150 years, Central Synagogue has grown to become a vibrant urban community, offering a wide array of religious, educational, cultural, and social justice programs. The synagogue serves more than 3,400 member families and reaches an extensive livestream community in the hundreds of thousands. It also educates over 800 students spanning from birth through twelfth grade in its nursery and religious schools. The synagogue's campus includes a historic landmark sanctuary, a nine-story Community House, and additional office spaces, reflecting its broad and dynamic operational scope.

The organization is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment. Central Synagogue embraces diversity by welcoming individuals from all backgrounds, including those historically marginalized or excluded from the Jewish community. With a staff exceeding 100 professionals and governed by a 29-member Board of Trustees, the synagogue offers a well-resourced and structured setting committed to spiritual growth, community engagement, and social action. The programming ranges from religious services and Shabbat and holiday celebrations to educational initiatives and social justice efforts addressing criminal justice reform and food insecurity.

The Breakfast Program team at Central Synagogue plays a critical role within this broader mission by operating the synagogue's breakfast outreach program. The Breakfast Program focuses on serving hot meals and to-go sandwiches to guests outside the synagogue’s sanctuary three mornings a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. This program addresses food accessibility and community support, strengthening the synagogue’s impact on the local community.

The role of Breakfast Program Worker involves a variety of responsibilities tied to the preparation and distribution of food. This position offers full-time employment with hours scheduled for early mornings and incorporates work on Jewish High Holy Days and specific special events throughout the year. The role involves receiving and managing food inventory, supporting kitchen prep and cooking tasks, and maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in the kitchen environment. Workers on the Breakfast Program team are expected to be detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and flexible, able to anticipate needs and effectively adapt to a fast-paced, team-driven environment.

Compensation for this position ranges from $21.00 to $23.00 per hour, commensurate with experience, with eligibility for overtime pay authorized by a supervisor. Central Synagogue provides a comprehensive benefits package tailored to support the wellbeing and financial security of its staff members. The synagogue places high value on teamwork, safety, and community spirit, making this an excellent opportunity for candidates passionate about food service, social justice, and community outreach within a spiritually meaningful context.
