The Food Service Assistant role is integral to the day-to-day operations within The Salvation Army’s commercial kitchen. This position supports the preparation and serving of meals, as well as the upkeep and sanitation of the kitchen and dining areas, adhering strictly to Department of Health requirements. The Food Service Assistant works as a collaborative team member under the supervision of a corps officer or administrator, ensuring clients, staff, and community visitors are treated with respect and dignity. The role involves direct interaction with clients, requiring sensitivity to issues such as homelessness, addiction, unemployment, racial and cultural diversity. This is a part-time position with an expectation of 25 hours per week, focused on maintaining a positive workplace atmosphere by demonstrating professionalism in conflict resolution, communication, and collaboration.

Key responsibilities of the Food Service Assistant include meal preparation according to special dietary needs, serving meals on a schedule, monitoring staff meal counts, and ensuring cleanliness and organization of kitchen and dining spaces. Additional duties involve managing kitchen stock after deliveries, recording food temperatures before serving, assisting volunteers, and operating company vehicles for transportation of meals and supplies. This position requires physical stamina for prolonged standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and engaging in repetitive motions throughout the workday. The role demands a valid driver’s license, passing background checks, drug testing, and safety training within the first 30 days of employment. Communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, as is the ability to use approved software for word processing, email, and timecard management. Job Requirements

  • Minimum six months experience working with people, preferably in a food services or similar environment
  • Ability to take directions and adapt to fast pace environment
  • Familiar with quantity food preparation, kitchen equipment and proper sanitation practices
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity to homelessness, chemical addiction, unemployment, racial and cultural diversity
  • Aptitude in oral communications
  • Must be trustworthy with confidential matters
  • Ability to accept supervision and work with team
  • Ability to use Salvation Army approved software tools
  • Valid driver’s license consistent with state and insurance regulations
  • Must pass background check, pre-employment drug test, MVR qualifications
  • Willingness to support Salvation Army mission and philosophy
  • Understand and complete Safe From Harm training within 30 days of employment

Job Duties

  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every client, donor, and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination
  • Engage all community members in a way that brings them to the Corps for programming, events, activities, and Pathway of Hope
  • Prepare facility meals in accordance with menu including allowances for clients medically approved special dietary needs
  • Serve meals to clients and staff according to posted time schedule
  • Monitor the number of staff meals received each day
  • Wash and put away all dishes
  • Maintain and organize dish-room
  • Put away perishables and non-perishable stock items on delivery days
  • Check and record temperature of food before each meal is served
  • Complete assigned cleaning duties as scheduled or as necessary
  • Maintain dining room and kitchen cleanliness and organization
  • Maintain and organize storage spaces and cookers
  • Assist volunteers in their responsibilities
  • Meet and greet all clients in a professional and courteous manner
  • Drive a company vehicle to pick up and deliver meals, supplies, donations, etc., as required
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
