The Food Server position at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a dynamic and rewarding role designed for individuals passionate about customer service and hospitality within a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. As a Food Server, you will be the face of the dining experience at one of their facilities, providing a welcoming atmosphere and excellent service to guests. You will be responsible for greeting guests, taking and serving orders, preparing select menu items such as salads, appetizers, and desserts, and maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of assigned tables and areas. This role directly supports the organization’s broader mission by enhancing visitor satisfaction and hospitality, thereby contributing to memorable experiences that encourage repeat visits and support for conservation efforts.

The position reports to the Lead Food Server, Manager, and Supervisor and offers an opportunity to work in a team-oriented environment where collaboration and professionalism are highly valued. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and ready to work flexible hours, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. This part-time, hourly role offers a competitive wage of $19.50 per hour, reflecting the organization's commitment to fair compensation. Job Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • At least one year of full service or fine dining restaurant experience
  • knowledge of wine, premium beers and specialty cocktails
  • understanding of standard menu items and daily specials
  • proficiency in cash handling procedures
  • knowledge of safety and sanitation methods used in the preparation and serving of food
  • familiarity with basic inventory controls and best practices
  • basic usage and care of standard kitchen equipment and utensils
  • understanding of guest service standards and policies
  • ability to operate and understand the cash register system
  • ability to proficiently handle cash and credit card transactions

Job Duties

  • Welcomes and greets guests
  • takes and serves food and beverages orders tableside
  • prepares certain menu items including salads, appetizers, and desserts
  • advises customers regarding menu items
  • make customer service a top priority
  • politely and professionally answers guests questions regarding the Zoo or Safari Park
  • professionally handle difficult situations with employees and guests
  • keeps assigned areas clean, orderly and in a safe condition
  • assists new personnel as needed
  • assists lead, cooks, manager and supervisor as needed
  • assists with special events when needed
  • compliance with the SDZWA and Health Departments uniform standards
  • maintains a passing grade on the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health Food Handlers exams
  • maintains a passing grade on the Environmental Health Department tests
  • adheres to all SDZWA and department policies and practices
  • performs related duties and responsibilities as required
