Job Description
The City of Portland Barron Center, operating under the Health & Human Services Department, is a distinguished care facility dedicated to providing skilled nursing and rehabilitation services to individuals in need. Part of a broader organization that includes divisions focused on Elder Affairs, Public Health, and Social Services, the Barron Center exemplifies a commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of Portland residents through collaborative efforts with community, state, and federal partners. With a legacy that spans over two centuries, the Barron Center is deeply rooted in the community it serves and upholds a mission-driven philosophy prioritizing resident-centered care. This mission emphasizes placing residents and their families first, ensuring dignity, sensitivity, and respect for diversity in all interactions. The establishment operates with a professional and ethical standard that fosters trust, empathy, and attentiveness, setting itself apart as a leader in healthcare through exceptional team-driven service delivery.
The Food Preparation Worker role at the Barron Center is vital in supporting the dietary service operations that cater to the nutritional needs of residents and staff alike. This position involves assisting with food preparation and serving meals both on-site and at external locations, ensuring the delivery of quality and timely food services. The Food Preparation Worker collaborates closely with Cook I to portion food products for various meal presentations, including tray line service, dining room, cafeteria, and day care program meals. Key responsibilities also include preparing ingredients according to standardized recipes, crafting salads and cold sandwiches, and managing vending machines for after-hours and weekend accessibility. This role necessitates vigilant care in maintaining food safety standards, such as monitoring food temperatures, to guarantee the highest quality output. Employees in this position must operate efficiently under time pressures, adhere to schedules and deadlines, and exhibit the capability to work independently without constant supervision. Additional duties may involve handling transactions using a cash register, displaying flexibility, and performing other related tasks as required.
This full-time position runs on a 37.5-hour workweek, primarily from 11 am to 7 pm, with Wednesdays and Thursdays off. The role is categorized under the union position CEBA, Grade 5, with a starting wage of $19.53 per hour. The City of Portland enhances this role with a robust benefits package including free employee health insurance upon completion of wellness incentives, thirteen paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, comprehensive life, dental, vision, and income protections, multiple retirement plan options including pensions, and several wellness and development perks such as fitness reimbursement and discounts on professional programs through local colleges. The Barron Center provides an inclusive work environment valuing diversity and equal opportunity employment, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates and offering reasonable accommodations as needed to support an accessible application process.
