Job Description
Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization with a mission dedicated to eliminating health inequities and improving the lives of Black, African American, and marginalized communities in the Bay Area. For over 35 years, Rafiki Coalition has provided a safe and welcoming space where community members can access health, healing, and hope. The organization offers a comprehensive range of holistic services that include free and low-cost health screenings, HIV prevention and care, mental health counseling, housing and economic support, fitness classes, and nutrition programs. The Coalition operates with a deeply rooted belief that wellness encompasses more than the mere absence of illness, embracing a whole-person approach that respects and honors the cultural, social, and emotional needs of the community it serves. This approach ensures that the services are not only effective but culturally responsive and tailored to the unique experiences of the populations it supports. At its core, Rafiki Coalition is more than just a service provider; it acts as a trusted partner, advocate, and resource. The organization's work is grounded in compassion, cultural humility, and a fervent commitment to social justice. Each day, the Rafiki team stands firmly alongside its community members, working collectively to dismantle systemic barriers, amplify marginalized voices, and create meaningful pathways to improved health and opportunity. Joining Rafiki means becoming part of a mission-driven organization dedicated to empowering individuals and strengthening communities through collaborative, innovative, and sustainable solutions. The organization’s culture encourages staff members to bring their passion, creativity, and expertise to drive change at both individual and systemic levels.
The role of Food Justice Coordinator at Rafiki Coalition is a pivotal position responsible for leading, coordinating, and advancing the organization's food justice initiatives and food access programs. The Coordinator acts as a vital connector among community members, partner organizations, volunteers, and staff to reinforce equitable, culturally responsive, and community-driven food systems. This role demands a passionate, community-centered leader committed to expanding access to healthy and culturally relevant food while promoting food justice, food sovereignty, and overall community wellness. Approximately 50% of the role focuses on the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of food justice initiatives. These include overseeing community food distribution, managing community gardens, conducting food education, facilitating volunteer engagement, executing outreach activities, fostering partnership development, and driving food policy efforts. The remaining 50% of the Coordinator’s responsibilities support the operations, logistics, and coordination of Rafiki Coalition’s Community Food Market, Feeding 5000, and various other food access programs. Working collaboratively with community partners, residents, volunteers, and organizational leadership, the Food Justice Coordinator plays a critical role in promoting community wellness, strengthening local food security, and advancing the wider mission of creating healthier, more equitable communities through solutions that are driven by the community’s needs and aspirations. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact the health and wellbeing of marginalized populations directly, while addressing food insecurity through a lens of social justice and sustainability. The position comes with a yearly salary range of $70,500 to $80,000, reflecting the importance and expertise required for this leadership role.
