Job Description

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is a prominent public educational organization committed to providing high-quality education and support services to a diverse student population across multiple campuses. Serving the community through a wide array of academic and extracurricular programs, the district values inclusion, equity, and excellence. The district’s Food and Nutrition Department plays a vital role in ensuring students and staff receive nutritious and delicious meals in a safe and welcoming environment. This department is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of food safety, nutrition, and service to support the health and well-being of all those served within the schools.

The district is currently seeking a Substitute for Food and Nutrition to join its dynamic team. This position is responsible for general work connected with the operation of food service, including food preparation, handling, and serving within various buildings throughout the school district. The role requires flexibility, as the substitute will be called upon as needed to fill in shifts at different locations. The hourly wage for this position is $14.00, which reflects the district's commitment to offering competitive compensation for valuable hourly employees.

In this role, the substitute will follow departmental procedures and comply with standard health regulations to ensure a safe food environment. Duties include assisting with washing pots, pans, dishes, trays, and silverware by approved methods and contributing to the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the food service areas. Participation in serving good quality food is essential, as is maintaining positive communication and professionalism when interacting with students, staff, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the substitute will represent the Food and Nutrition Department in a positive and professional manner, supporting its mission of providing excellent service.

The position demands physical endurance and the ability to perform repetitive tasks such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling food-related equipment. Employees must be comfortable working in environments where noise levels are above average and temperature conditions are warmer than typical office settings. The work involves being on one's feet for extended periods and occasionally working on damp floors, requiring attentiveness to safety and hygiene practices.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District encourages professional development; therefore, the substitute may be asked to participate in short courses, meetings, and in-service training sessions to enhance skills and stay informed of best practices in food service. Flexibility in scheduling and a willingness to learn are crucial attributes for success in this role. The district values teamwork and the ability to work well with a diverse group of people, reflecting its inclusive culture.

The Substitute for Food and Nutrition position is a vital part of the school district's efforts to provide consistent and reliable food service operations across its campuses. With the opportunity to engage with a variety of individuals and contribute to a positive school environment, this role offers meaningful experience in the food service industry within an educational setting. Those interested in supporting community health and nutrition through dedicated service are encouraged to apply. Flexible work hours and the chance to contribute to a respected public school system make this position an attractive opportunity for food service professionals seeking a dynamic and rewarding role.
