Job Description

Wayne Metro is a community-focused organization dedicated to providing essential social services and support to families and individuals within the Detroit metropolitan area. Among its diverse programs, Wayne Metro operates specialized services aimed at promoting the health, well-being, and educational development of children through initiatives including the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. These programs are federally funded initiatives that cater to low-income families, providing comprehensive early childhood education, nutrition, and family support to ensure children have the foundations necessary for lifelong success. The organization emphasizes inclusivity, community involvement, and adherence to high standards of service to support economic, social, health, and educational advancement for vulnerable populations.

The Food Service Operator position is a vital role within the Head Start and Early Head Start programs offered by Wayne Metro. This role primarily involves distributing nutritious family-style meals to children participating in these programs, ensuring their dietary needs are met in accordance with state and local food safety regulations. The Food Service Operator collaborates closely with classroom staff, cooks, site managers, and program managers to maintain a smooth and efficient food distribution process that supports children's health and nutritional requirements, including accommodations for allergies and dietary preferences. This position operates within a kitchen environment and requires hands-on involvement in food preparation, distribution, sanitation, and menu planning activities. Alongside these duties, the operator must maintain clear communication, keep work areas clean and equipment in good working order, and participate in team meetings and training sessions to uphold the program's standards and policies.

This role demands physical stamina and the ability to work in kitchen environments that can expose employees to heat, steam, noise, and require manual tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. The operator must be capable of multitasking, problem-solving, and maintaining a positive, professional demeanor while engaging with both children and colleagues. The employment type includes a flexible schedule primarily Monday through Friday with occasional Saturdays, catering to the operational needs of the program. Candidates must hold a current food handler’s card, have undergone relevant physical and TB tests, and possess valid identification and reliable transportation. Although COVID-19 vaccination is encouraged, reasonable accommodations may be considered.

Overall, the Food Service Operator plays an essential role in ensuring that children in the Head Start and Early Head Start programs receive safe, nutritious meals in a family-style setting, contributing significantly to their growth and development. This position offers an opportunity to work in a supportive community-oriented organization that values professionalism, inclusivity, and the health and well-being of children and families it serves.
