Job Description

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is a reputable educational institution committed to fostering a positive and enriching environment for its students and staff. Operating within this district is the Food and Nutrition Department, which plays a crucial role in ensuring students receive nutritious and quality meals essential for their growth and development. This department emphasizes providing balanced meals while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene. The district supports an inclusive workforce and is dedicated to creating a workplace free from discrimination based on race, creed, color, gender, national origin, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability.

This particular opportunity is for a Food Service Worker role within the Food and Nutrition Department, designed to operate on a nine-month schedule aligned closely with the school calendar. This schedule uniquely supports employees with families as it corresponds to the children’s school routines, offering summers off along with nights and weekends free. The position demands approximately five hours of work per day, typically scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., allowing ample personal time for other responsibilities, especially parenting. Earning $15.89 per hour, this role provides a fair and competitive wage within the community.

The role focuses on assisting in various aspects of food preparation and service within the school district’s kitchen and cafeteria settings. Responsibilities include both cooking and baking assistance when required, participation in serving food to students and staff, and managing dishwashing duties according to approved hygienic methods. Flexibility is essential, as employees must be willing to work hours conducive to the school’s operational schedule. The physical nature of the job involves extended standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, all while maintaining compliance with food safety standards and being mindful of known allergens.

Working conditions involve a noisy and warm kitchen environment where the employee will navigate varying temperatures and occasionally damp floors. Despite these challenges, this role offers stability, meaningful engagement, and an opportunity to positively impact the community’s youth by supporting their nutritional needs. The district encourages continuous learning and professional development through participation in short courses, meetings, and in-service training sessions. Punctuality, regular attendance, and strong communication with colleagues and those served by the department are integral to success in this role. Overall, this position is ideal for individuals passionate about contributing to community wellness, eager to work in a structured yet supportive environment, and seeking a work-life balance that supports family priorities.
