They are recognized as one of the largest U.S. suppliers of safety products and a leading provider of ammonia products and process chemicals. With a dedicated workforce of 18,000 associates, Airgas promotes a culture built on safety, sustainability, innovation, and customer success. The company operates under the global umbrella of Air Liquide, a world leader in gases, technologies, and services, which has a presence in 60 countries and employs approximately 66,500 employees worldwide. Airgas proudly serves more than 4 million customers and patients, focusing on delivering products safely and efficiently while fostering an inclusive and dynamic workplace environment.
The Field Service Technician role at Airgas, located in Fort Wayne, IN, and Lima, OH retail shops, is critical to ensuring the effective installation, care, and operational maintenance of on-site nitrogen generation plants and bulk medical or industrial gas systems. This position requires the technician to work safely in compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local codes, as well as Airgas-specific policies. The Field Service Technician will be responsible for installing nitrogen on-site generation equipment and supporting cryogenic bulk installations both at Airgas facilities and customer sites. Duties include restoring and optimizing pressure reduction equipment linked with bulk delivery systems and performing system improvements related to electrical controls, alarms, and motor functions.
Additional responsibilities include coordinating appropriate hazard decals and warning signs, installing piping systems according to company standards, conducting site surveys to maintain regulatory compliance, securing installations against unauthorized access, and performing preventive maintenance tasks on nitrogen generation equipment to ensure long-term reliability. The technician must also evaluate bulk installation sites annually to verify operational integrity and uphold strong safety standards to ensure the wellbeing of all personnel. Maintaining an inventory of essential parts and providing support to the team as needed are also key components of the job.
Airgas offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees holistically, encompassing medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and AD&D insurance. They provide a 14-week paid childbirth benefit for parents, a 401(k) retirement plan with company match, tuition assistance, paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Employees gain access to these benefits after only 30 days of employment, reflecting the company’s commitment to early support and investment in employee wellbeing.
Ideal candidates for this opportunity must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold or be able to obtain a Certified Brazer Certificate within 30 days of employment, and have a valid driver’s license. Preferred qualifications include HVAC or refrigeration certification, American Society Safety Engineers Medical Gas Credentials, and at least two years of industrial field service experience, particularly with gas generation systems. Knowledge of welding, brazing processes (especially silver brazing), electrical troubleshooting, NFPA 99 and NFPA 55 codes, and cryogenic equipment is highly advantageous. The ability to read blueprints, perform mathematical calculations, utilize Microsoft Office applications, and work independently under pressure while demonstrating excellent communication and time management skills are essential for success in this position.
Joining Airgas means becoming part of a diverse and inclusive workplace that values every associate's unique perspective. The company encourages innovation, personal growth, and teamwork while striving to maintain a safe and engaging environment for all employees. As a Field Service Technician at Airgas, you will play a vital role in maintaining critical industrial infrastructure and ensuring the efficient operation of essential gas systems, contributing directly to customer satisfaction and organizational success.
