Thermo Fisher Scientific is a global leader in serving science, renowned for advancing innovative technologies, developing meaningful solutions, and building rewarding careers. With revenues exceeding $40 billion, the company empowers its professionals by providing extensive resources and opportunities to make significant contributions to science and society. Thermo Fisher Scientific supports a wide range of industries and customers, focusing on areas such as healthcare, environmental protection, food safety, and scientific research. The company is committed to enabling its customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer through the delivery of high-performance scientific instruments and services.

The Materials and Structural Analysis Electron Microscopy (M&SA EM) business at Thermo Fisher Scientific plays a crucial role in accelerating breakthrough discoveries by designing, manufacturing, and supporting the broadest array of high-performance microscopy workflows. These workflows provide detailed images and answers at micro-, nano-, and picometer scales, spanning multiple applications in materials science, life sciences, electronics, and natural resources markets. The Electron Microscopy team, known for combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy, is dedicated to helping customers pursue discovery and resolve global challenges.

This role involves working as a Field Service Engineer within the M&SA EM group, handling sophisticated microscopy equipment installations, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair. The successful candidate will be based in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) territory, preferably in Raleigh, NC, within one hour of a major airport, and will be expected to travel up to 75% of the time to customer sites on often short notice. This position offers a dynamic, hands-on environment where the engineer will solve technically challenging problems, maintain equipment performance, and ensure customer satisfaction in an atmosphere requiring adherence to cleanroom protocols and personal protective equipment standards.

The Field Service Engineer will conduct on-site installation and testing, perform scheduled maintenance visits, provide repair support, and develop positive relationships with customers and company personnel. Additionally, responsibilities include system user training, contributing to system documentation, and providing feedback for product quality improvements. The role demands strong technical expertise to diagnose and repair ultra-high vacuum and high voltage systems, familiarity with sophisticated analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, and FIB, and the ability to read and interpret schematics.

Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, professional proficiency in English, and the ability to work effectively with customers. They must also be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, navigating a laboratory and cleanroom environment with specific restrictions on personal items and the use of protective equipment. Having a valid driver’s license and passport for regional and international travel is essential. This position is ideal for experienced service engineers seeking varied customer application exposure and opportunities to join a knowledgeable, collaborative team dedicated to scientific advancement and customer success.
