Job Description
The City of Saline is a vibrant community located in Michigan, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of its residents through various city initiatives and programs. Among these initiatives is the operation of the Saline Farmers Markets, both seasonal outdoor and indoor markets that promote local agriculture, fresh food access, and community engagement. The City maintains a commitment to fostering local economy and supporting small businesses by providing a platform where farmers, artisans, and vendors can showcase their products directly to the community. The markets not only serve as hubs for commerce but also as community gathering spaces offering a range of enrichment programs, food assistance, and social interaction opportunities throughout the year.
The City of Saline is currently seeking a part-time Market Manager to oversee the successful operation of their Summer and Winter Farmers Markets. This contractor role involves coordinating all aspects of the farmers markets held in two primary locations: the downtown parking lot during the warmer months from May through October, and Liberty School during the colder months from November through April. The Market Manager is expected to work between 15 and 20 hours per week, with a pay range of $22 to $25 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position requires significant on-site presence every Saturday year-round with additional administrative duties performed as needed throughout the season.
In this role, the Market Manager will take full responsibility for day-to-day market operations including vendor relations, budget creation and adherence, marketing, volunteer coordination, and ensuring compliance with city and health regulations. Success in this position calls for strong organizational skills, experience in event planning, knowledge of food retail licensing, and the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders including city officials, vendors, volunteers, and customers. The Market Manager will plan and facilitate enrichment programs, manage sponsorships, handle food assistance program enrollment and logistics, and monitor market metrics like vendor attendance and customer participation.
Additional key responsibilities include graphic design for marketing and promotion, producing weekly market maps, handling all market setup and takedown using a personal vehicle, maintaining accurate financial and operational records, and ensuring smooth market day traffic and vendor compliance. The role also requires capturing publicity materials such as photographs and videos to promote the market through newsletters and social media. Maintaining a detailed market manager manual with up-to-date policies, schedules, and financial information is also vital for the consistent and professional running of the markets.
The ideal candidate for the Market Manager position will have prior experience managing or vending at farmers markets, familiarity with food sales and service regulations, and a background in gardening, agriculture, or botany. Knowledge of city ordinances, county health codes, Michigan Cottage Food Law, and effective team and conflict management skills are essential. Candidates with certification from the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MiFMA) are preferred. This role demands physical capability to lift more than 50 pounds and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
The City of Saline embraces diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled and can be submitted through the City's official website or by emailing a cover letter and resume directly to the Human Resources Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about local food systems, community engagement, and effective market management to contribute meaningfully to the City of Saline’s vibrant farmers market culture.
