Job Description
Churchill Downs Racetrack ("CDRT"), famously known as the world's most legendary racetrack, has served as the iconic home of The Kentucky Derby since 1875. As one of the longest continually held annual sporting events in the United States, the Kentucky Derby is a historic and prestigious horse racing event that attracts thousands of visitors locally and internationally each year. Situated in Louisville, Kentucky, CDRT is a prominent Thoroughbred racing venue that showcases race meets in the Spring, September, and Fall seasons.
Sprawled across 175 sprawling acres, Churchill Downs features extensive facilities, including a one-mile dirt track and a 7/8-mile turf track, designed to host thrilling horse races. The venue also has a vast stabling area capable of accommodating around 1,400 horses, along with a 114-room dormitory for backstretch personnel. The property accommodates approximately 60,000 guests, offering them a memorable race-day experience infused with tradition and excitement. Additionally, CDRT operates a year-round simulcast wagering facility that enhances its offerings and appeals to betting enthusiasts.
The role of Shift Supervisor at Churchill Downs Racetrack is pivotal in maintaining and enhancing the high standards of guest service and food quality across its dining and hospitality areas. The Shift Supervisor is entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing day-to-day food and beverage operations, ensuring exemplary guest satisfaction by leading and motivating the team. This position demands a proactive individual who can uphold the franchise standards, impart the company’s service principles to new team members, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations at all times.
Shift Supervisors play a vital leadership role by acting as role models both within and outside the racing and gaming facility. They promote a culture of positivity, respect, and open communication among guests and fellow employees. Additionally, they manage operational priorities during shifts, supervise associates’ performance, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate ongoing employee training to boost skill development. The role requires careful attention to inventory management using proper rotation methods and strict adherence to company policies and operational procedures.
This position also calls for effective communication with managerial staff regarding operational improvements and challenges, ensuring that any deficiencies are promptly addressed. Shift Supervisors contribute to executing new menu rollouts, daily specials, and promotions while maintaining kitchen equipment and venue appearance according to company standards. A fundamental part of the role is fostering teamwork, employee morale, and motivation to create an enjoyable workplace environment where both guests and staff can have a positive experience.
Ideal candidates for this role are adept in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and are familiar with timekeeping and point-of-sale systems, including PayCor and Revention. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods and the capability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Candidates are expected to hold a high school diploma or GED, demonstrate relevant leadership experience in food and beverage settings, and obtain necessary certifications such as alcohol service and Serv-Safe within stipulated timeframes.
Churchill Downs Racetrack offers an inclusive workplace committed to equal employment opportunities irrespective of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability. This employment opportunity not only provides a chance to be part of a historic sporting legacy but also promises a dynamic and rewarding career in the hospitality and entertainment industry.
