Job Description
The City of Overland Park is a vibrant and dynamic municipality known for its commitment to providing excellent public services and recreational opportunities to its residents and visitors. Overland Park's Parks and Recreation Department plays a crucial role in enhancing community life by managing and maintaining parklands, recreational facilities, and community programs that encourage active lifestyles and foster social connections. The department is dedicated to creating safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environments where people of all ages can explore nature, participate in events, and enjoy leisure activities throughout the year.
The Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking a temporary Facility/Events Attendant to join their team. This position is based at the Arboretum, a beautiful facility known for its lush gardens, scenic walking paths, and versatile event spaces. The Facility/Events Attendant will be instrumental in supporting the daily operations of the Arboretum's LongHouse, providing excellent customer service, assisting with event setups, and ensuring the facility remains clean and safe for all visitors. This role is particularly well-suited for individuals who enjoy a fast-paced, customer-oriented work environment and have flexibility to work varying hours, including nights and weekends.
As a temporary position, the Facility/Events Attendant offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience working within a municipal parks system. The role offers a competitive pay rate of $15.00 per hour, reflecting the importance the city places on supporting quality community programs. Employment is part-time with variable hours that may fluctuate based on business needs, and the schedule can range from 8:00 AM to midnight. This flexibility requires the ability to efficiently manage tasks during operational hours and maintain a professional and helpful presence throughout all shifts.
The key responsibilities for the Facility/Events Attendant include assisting patrons, enforcing facility rules and regulations, collecting fees, and setting up event spaces. You'll work closely with the Operations and Event Supervisors to support a wide range of functions such as meetings, classes, public tours, and special events held at the Arboretum. Light custodial duties like sweeping, mopping, and trash pickup are also part of the role to help keep the facility clean and inviting. Additionally, you may be involved in operating various audio-visual equipment and supporting gift shop or concession sales, contributing to an engaging visitor experience.
This position requires excellent interpersonal skills to effectively assist customers and maintain positive relations with facility users. Problem-solving abilities are essential for responding appropriately to unexpected situations and ensuring compliance with established policies. Candidates must be punctual, reliable, and able to work independently as well as part of a team. The role is physically active, involving the setup and teardown of tables, chairs, and equipment, and requires adherence to safety and operational guidelines.
Applicants should note that a valid driver's license and the ability to pass background checks, drug screenings, and physical examinations are mandatory prerequisites for this position. The City of Overland Park celebrates diversity and is an equal opportunity employer, welcoming applications from all qualified individuals. This temporary role does not require city residency, and the work location is in person at the Arboretum facility.
If you are passionate about community recreation, enjoy event coordination, and want to contribute to a premier public park setting, the role of Facility/Events Attendant with Overland Park's Parks and Recreation Department is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in a supportive and engaging environment.
