Job Description

Howard County Recreation and Parks is a well-established public agency dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents by offering a wide range of recreational activities, programs, and facility rentals. The department operates several historic rental facilities and park properties located throughout Howard County, providing unique and charming venues for weddings, parties, meetings, retreats, and various other social occasions. These historic sites are treasured community assets, hosting events that require careful management to maintain their integrity and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.

This open position is geared towards individuals who can provide intermediate-level recreation services while supporting the efficient and safe operation of these historic facilities, especially during evening and weekend events. The role is pivotal in assuring that rental clients receive excellent customer service and support throughout their event experience, from setup to completion. Seasonal demand is highest from April through November, with a requirement to work 1-2 evening or weekend nights during this period, aligning with the peak rental schedule typically on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

The incumbent will play a critical role in coordinating with other facility and park staff to ensure seamless event execution. This includes interacting with event vendors, caterers, and partners to troubleshoot issues, enforce park and facility rules, and provide logistical support such as parking assistance and accessibility accommodation for guests. The role demands strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a customer-focused attitude to handle any complications that arise, including maintenance and safety concerns.

Additionally, the position involves monitoring the facility and grounds throughout an event to ensure cleanliness, safety, and proper use of equipment and spaces. Staff will be responsible for opening and closing duties, equipment setup and takedown assistance, and restocking supplies as needed. Safety is a high priority, with expectations that the employee will be trained in AED, CPR, and First Aid (training may occur post-hiring). Regular safety and maintenance inspections are part of the duties, along with the documentation of any hazards, rule violations, or property damage for management review.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working in an outdoor public service environment, have a knack for customer service, and appreciate the historical significance of the facilities they help manage. The successful candidate will be a proactive team player, comfortable working evenings and weekends, who can maintain composure and professionalism in a dynamic event setting. This position contributes directly to the smooth operation and positive reputation of Howard County’s historic recreation venues, helping to create memorable experiences for the community and visitors alike.
