Job Description

The position of Facilities Technician II is a full-time employment opportunity, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week, and classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This role is offered by an established organization known as the National Botanical Garden (NBG), a prestigious institution dedicated to horticulture, education, and public enjoyment of plant collections. NBG is a respected employer that values team collaboration, safety, and the continued care and maintenance of its facilities, ensuring that the environment remains both beautiful and functional for visitors and staff alike.

The Facilities Technician II is a pivotal role within the Garden's operations team, responsible for a wide range of maintenance and repair duties that ensure the smooth running and long-term reliability of the Garden's infrastructure. This position involves hands-on tasks including general building maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, minor electrical and plumbing work, and the preparation and setup for various events hosted at the Garden. Candidates must be adept at using tools and machinery safely and efficiently, with an emphasis on teamwork and adherence to safety standards.

In this role, technicians not only handle routine maintenance but also participate in complex repair projects in collaboration with their peers and supervisors. Training is provided for specialized equipment operation and safety procedures, reflecting the organization’s commitment to employee development. The work schedule for this position includes weekend availability, emphasizing the need for flexibility to meet the operational demands of the Garden, especially during public events and seasonal activities.

Applicants should bring experience in facility maintenance, with a working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, which are critical to supporting the Garden’s various buildings and infrastructure. This role requires the ability to lift moderately heavy weights, withstand outdoor working conditions, and operate equipment such as forklifts, mini-loaders, Bobcats, and lifts. The Facilities Technician II also plays a key role in custodial duties and event support, making this a versatile and dynamic position suitable for candidates who are self-motivated and customer-service oriented.

The compensation for this role starts at $17.00 per hour, and the position is represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO. Employment comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance with options for an HSA or copay, a 403(b) retirement plan with discretionary matching, life insurance, and group rates on various voluntary benefits. Paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, and professional development opportunities are also included, along with staff discounts on programming and gift shop purchases, and employee assistance program (EAP) services.

This role at NBG offers more than just a job; it presents an opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of a world-class botanical institution while developing valuable skills in facilities management and safety practices. Candidates who are detail-oriented, capable of working independently and within a team setting, and eager to take on meaningful responsibilities in a respected cultural landmark are encouraged to apply. NBG promotes an inclusive workplace, adhering strictly to equal employment opportunity principles, welcoming diverse applicants without discrimination, and supporting all employees to perform to their fullest potential.
