Job Description
University Housing Facilities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a dynamic and dedicated team focused on creating and maintaining safe, comfortable, and sustainable living environments for thousands of students, staff, and their families. As part of the Division of University Housing, this department oversees a vast portfolio of residential buildings and community spaces, including 30 residence halls, 1,240 university apartments, and 86 acres of greenspace and infrastructure. Together, these facilities accommodate approximately 8,000 undergraduate students during the academic year and more than 18,000 guests throughout the summer. The scope of operations extends beyond housing to include classrooms, office and meeting spaces, dining and culinary venues, event spaces, and a licensed early childhood education program within the community center. This comprehensive portfolio requires a team that is responsive, flexible, and committed to excellence in service and maintenance.
The role of Facilities Technician II within University Housing Facilities is critical to the smooth operation and upkeep of these living and learning environments. This position provides essential services in grounds maintenance, trades support, and general maintenance within occupied residential spaces and between occupancies. Facilities Technicians II work to uphold the aesthetics and safety of campus residential areas, including managing grounds upkeep, snow removal, repairs, and ongoing projects. With responsibilities covering 86 acres of grounds—such as recreation areas, parking lots, roadways, and 7 miles of sidewalks—this role ensures that residents experience a safe, welcoming environment every day. The team’s duties extend to tree maintenance and health monitoring, winter weather response for safe passage on campus walkways and roadways, and assisting with construction and operational maintenance tasks.
Employees in this position typically work full-time, regular, Monday through Friday shifts from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with multiple vacancies available. There is flexibility in scheduling to adapt to operational demands. Compensation starts at an hourly wage of $22.00 or higher based on qualifications, with additional pay for nighttime and weekend work. The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a competitive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off and holidays, retirement pension plans, and professional development opportunities. University Housing Facilities prides itself on a supportive work culture where supervisors focus on individual team members' well-being and growth, fostering a positive and engaging workplace.
Candidates applying for this role should have at least one year of experience in groundskeeping, landscape maintenance, or snow removal and possess a valid driver’s license meeting university risk management standards. Preferred candidates bring over two years of relevant experience, familiarity operating skid steers and plow trucks, and basic residential repair skills. While a high school diploma is preferred, relevant experience and skills are heavily valued. A background check is required due to the nature of the position’s access to vulnerable populations.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on work, value teamwork, and are dedicated to maintaining high standards in facility management within a vibrant university setting. Facilities Technician II employees not only keep the university’s residential communities safe and functional but also contribute significantly to the overall student experience at UW-Madison, supporting the mission to provide excellent living and learning environments for all residents.
