Job Description
Tulare County Human Resources and Development is committed to attracting, retaining, and developing a highly skilled workforce to serve the needs of the county's diverse departments and agencies. With a workforce of over 5,100 employees spanning more than 20 county departments and 800 job classifications, Tulare County fosters a supportive workplace culture that values work-life balance and employee growth. The department offers extensive services including payroll processing, employee and labor relations, wellness programs, benefits administration, and training opportunities. Employees enjoy generous benefits, including comprehensive health plans, paid time off, vacation, and retirement packages. Working for Tulare County means being part of a family-like atmosphere where each individual's work contributes meaningfully to the community.
This recruitment is open on a continuous basis to fill extra-help Custodial Worker positions in various county departments throughout the Tulare County geographic area, primarily based in Visalia, California. Extra help employees provide essential custodial and janitorial services needed to maintain the cleanliness and safety of county facilities. These positions are hourly, with a wage of $18.42 per hour, and the number of hours and duration of employment vary based on departmental needs and assignments. Extra help positions do not include benefits and are limited to a maximum of 1,559 hours per fiscal year (July to June). If hired, applicants must reapply for employment upon the completion of each work assignment. The role supports the smooth operation and presentation of county buildings and facilities by performing a range of cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair duties. This role is ideal for candidates who have custodial or janitorial experience and a strong work ethic, with flexibility to work in various locations across the county.
The Custodial Worker will be responsible for cleaning offices, restrooms, floors, stairways, and hallways by sweeping, mopping, waxing, stripping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and shampooing carpets. Additional duties include dusting, polishing, and washing furniture, cleaning light fixtures, vents, walls, sinks, windows, window shades, blinds, ashtrays, drinking fountains, and utility sinks. Employees will empty waste receptacles regularly, assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and set up rooms for special events. Minor non-technical repairs such as replacing lights, adjusting shades or blinds, and adjusting desks or furniture are also expected, along with operating electrical floor polishing machines.
Additional responsibilities may include sweeping outside areas and sidewalks, securing the building by locking doors and turning off lights at the end of the shift, preparing route worksheets, time cards, and supply lists, maintaining utility storage areas and custodial equipment in good condition, and fueling equipment and auxiliary tanks in a Public Works setting. The role demands careful attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and teamwork in close collaboration with supervisors and co-workers.
Candidates must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, read equipment manuals, accurately mix cleaning solutions, maintain custodial equipment, and identify possible safety hazards. Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California driver's license is required, as is passing a background investigation to work within Sheriff's Department detention facilities if assigned there. Selected candidates will also be required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and potentially undergo physical examinations. Tulare County's hiring approach represents an inclusive equal employment opportunity for all qualified applicants. Moreover, this position may qualify for student loan forgiveness under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) for those eligible. This role offers a meaningful opportunity for those seeking flexible employment while contributing to the maintenance and function of county facilities.
