Job Description
County of Tulare - Human Resources and Development (HR&D) is a vital department committed to serving the public and county employees by managing diverse and essential workforce functions. Located in Visalia, Tulare County HR&D supports over 20 county departments and more than 5,100 employees across more than 800 job classifications, providing a comprehensive suite of services including payroll processing, employee and labor relations, employee records management, training, wellness programs, and benefits administration. Known for cultivating a supportive work environment, Tulare County HR&D promotes work-life balance and offers competitive benefits, including excellent health plans, vacation time, paid time off, and retirement packages. Employees are valued as part of a professional family where their roles make a significant impact on community services and day-to-day government operations.
This recruitment is for an extra help Custodian position within the General Services Agency of Tulare County. Extra help positions are temporary and meant to fill current or future vacancies for up to six months. These positions offer flexible part-time hours that vary by assignment and department, with employees potentially working in various county departments across the region. The nature of this employment means incumbents will not receive benefits, and they must not exceed 1,559 hours worked within any given fiscal year. Successful candidates are placed on an employment list for consideration as needed, with assignments subject to availability. The custodian role involves general cleaning and maintenance duties in offices, restrooms, and other county facilities.
The custodial duties include sweeping, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, scrubbing floors and stairways, dusting, polishing, and washing furniture and fixtures. The role also requires handling waste receptacles, cleaning windows, vents, sinks, drinking fountains, ashtrays, and utility areas. Custodians may assist with moving and arranging furniture and equipment in preparation for events and undertake minor non-technical repairs like replacing light bulbs or adjusting window coverings. Operating cleaning machinery such as floor polishers and maintaining custodial equipment is expected. Safety responsibilities include locking doors, turning off lights, and checking building security at the end of shifts. This position demands the ability to prepare supplies lists, time cards, and clean work areas diligently.
Applicants must have at least one year of experience in custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or related fields and have completed the 12th grade. They should demonstrate knowledge of basic math skills to calculate working hours, use proper cleaning solutions, and maintain equipment following safety protocols. The ability to follow verbal and written instructions, read maintenance manuals, and work cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers is essential. Successful candidates must have, or be able to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and pass a law enforcement background check to work in Sheriff Department detention facilities if assigned.
This position requires candidates to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and may involve physical examinations and periodic background reinvestigations for some roles. The job may qualify for student loan forgiveness under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act for eligible repayment plans. Tulare County is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce and will provide reasonable accommodations as needed. The closing date for applications is April 20, 2026.
