The role of a Baker at Giant Eagle is vital in ensuring that the bakery department produces delicious, fresh, and visually appealing products for customers daily. This position requires a dedicated Team Member who can skillfully prepare and bake a variety of bakery items using established recipes and scratch procedures. As a Bakery Team Member, your responsibilities include preparing bakery products according to specific recipes, baking items to perfection with appropriate timing and temperature controls, and ensuring all products meet the high standards of freshness and quality that Giant Eagle customers expect. You will also handle scratch recipes, prepare and fry donuts, and maintain proper sanitation and safety procedures at all times. The position requires physical stamina to lift up to 50 pounds and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized workspace, including equipment, utensils, and floors.

In addition to technical baking skills, the role demands excellent customer service abilities. Bakers are expected to actively engage with guests, answer questions, resolve concerns, and employ suggestive selling techniques when appropriate. The role also includes responsibilities such as accurately recording special orders, managing product displays, rotating stock to adhere to code dating procedures, and assisting with inventory management by unloading deliveries and organizing the backroom, cooler, and freezer areas.

This position is well-suited for individuals with a background in bakery operations or related industries; however, those who have completed programs like the Giant Eagle Apprenticeship or have 6 to 12 months of relevant experience also qualify. While a high school diploma is not required, the ability to perform essential job functions and pass a job-specific skills assessment are necessary. Job Qualifications

  • satisfactory completion of job specific skills assessment
  • 6 to 12 months experience or successful completion of the Giant Eagle Apprenticeship program
  • prior experience working in bakery or related industry preferred
  • no high school diploma required
  • knowledgeable about bakery ingredients and scratch baking
  • excellent customer service skills
  • ability to follow safety and sanitation regulations
  • strong attention to detail

Job Duties

  • perform bench work according to established scratch procedures when necessary
  • prepare product and form product to specifications as required according to scratch recipes
  • bake prepared product using appropriate time and temperature as specified by recipe
  • prepare bakery products according to established recipes which include scratch recipes
  • properly insert products into proof box, set controls, and close door to ensure proper size and shape of product
  • prepare and fry donuts according to established procedures
  • insert products into and retrieve products from the freezer to preserve freshness
  • kindly answer questions and resolve problems to ensure guest requirements are met
  • actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques and provide active sampling when appropriate
  • provide exemplary customer service by greeting customers and ensuring they are able to locate the products they are looking for
  • maintain safety as the top priority in all aspects of work
  • bake prepared and scratch product for bakery cases and displays, rotating product and ensuring code dating procedures are followed
  • maintain cleanliness of equipment, tables, utensils, floor, etc. to ensure safety and sanitation regulations are met
  • accurately record special orders on bakery products to ensure customer satisfaction
  • maintain proper safety and sanitation methods, emergency procedures, clean-ups, steritech, proper lifting and housekeeping to ensure department standards are met
  • understand all the ingredients and purpose of each used in manufacturing scratch baked goods
  • assist in maintaining bakery backroom, cooler and freezer efficiency by unloading deliveries
  • assemble necessary baking ingredients to prepare for baking operation including all scratch recipes
  • assist in other areas as required
