The currently available role is for a Food Quality Manager at St. Joseph Mercy, a vital position responsible for overseeing all food quality aspects and food production within the campus. This full-time role operates on a rotating shift schedule. The Food Quality Manager acts as the final authority on food quality, ensuring that all food served meets stringent standards and that purchasing decisions align with quality guidelines. This role involves close collaboration with department managers and professionals to design menus, develop recipes, and establish food presentation standards across all eating sites on campus.
Responsibilities include managing vendor selection and food specifications, supervising cafeteria food production and staff, handling special event menus and promotions, and maintaining strong customer relations to promptly address concerns and enhance satisfaction. The Food Quality Manager also develops production systems in partnership with the Catering/Production Manager, ensuring consistent quality outcomes. In addition to operational duties, the manager leads food quality-focused work groups, provides training and performance feedback to staff, and serves as a relief service manager when needed.
Candidates for this role should have a high school diploma or GED with specialized training and two to three years of progressively responsible experience in food quality or food service management. Preferred qualifications include a Culinary Degree from an American Culinary Federation (ACF) accredited program or an Associate’s degree, culinary certification, and ACF Apprenticeship. Essential skills for the role encompass strong interpersonal communication, analytical problem-solving, technical abilities to develop operational procedures, active listening, and creative marketing capabilities.

Job Duties
- Works with managers to develop the department quality vision, expectations, and on-going action plan as it pertains to all food on the Trinity Health Ann Arbor campus
- Works with managers on maintaining all aspects of food quality presentation and food purchasing including vendor selection and specification writing
- Sets the standard for receiving practices and acts as receiving point for questionable items
- Has ultimate authority and responsibility for accepting or rejecting all food items
- Develops production systems and procedures in collaboration with the Catering/Production Manager to foster quality outcomes
- Oversees food production and presentation of cafeteria meal service and provides frontline supervision for cafeteria staff
- Collaborates on menus and writes recipes for all food operations on campus
- Works with manager on all special one-time menus for catered events and other specials and consults on marketing aspects
- Maintains customer contact regularly to determine and respond to customer needs and troubleshoots food-related complaints
- Documents food-related problem solving as necessary or required by regulatory agencies
- Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships, approaches conflict constructively, and participates in problem resolution
- Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, colleague, and visitor information
- Behaves in accordance with Trinity Health's code of conduct, service excellence standards, and organizational policies
- Assumes responsibility for job safety and reports hazards immediately
- Keeps abreast of recent trends in food preparation and presentation with emphasis on healthy eating habits
- Presents training on food handling techniques to staff
- Provides performance appraisal feedback on food quality issues
- Facilitates quality-focused work groups quarterly
- Acts as Relief Service Manager when necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned
