Job Description
Chartwells K12 is a leading provider of school food services in the United States, dedicated to transforming school cafeterias into exciting, healthy dining environments that encourage students to leave happier and healthier than when they entered. With a workforce of over 16,000 associates serving 4,500 schools ranging from large public institutions to small charter and private schools, Chartwells K12 leverages decades of food, education, and operational expertise. This expertise is driven by top talent in culinary arts, nutrition, wellness, and sustainability to create custom dining programs tailored to each school's unique needs.
Chartwells K12 operates under the larger Compass Group USA umbrella, which stands as one of the most respected names in foodservice management and hospitality. The company is deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and fairness in hiring and workplace treatment. It maintains a drug-free work environment and complies with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations to ensure a safe, welcoming, and equitable atmosphere for its employees and customers alike.
The role of Executive Chef at Chartwells K12 within the Flagstaff Unified School District is a highly visible and impactful culinary leadership position. Serving approximately 8,800 students across 15 schools and one charter site, the Executive Chef oversees the production of roughly 5,100 meals daily. This leadership role requires balancing creativity and operational expertise by ensuring all meals are nutritious, high-quality, and appealing to a diverse student population. The Executive Chef will maintain rigorous standards in food quality, safety, and consistent presentation.
Reporting directly to the Director of Dining Services, the Executive Chef will supervise and mentor a team of 54 frontline associates, fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. This position demands a hands-on leader who is passionate about working with students and committed to leading by example. The Executive Chef will partner closely with the Assistant Director and the frontline kitchen team to enhance the overall dining experience, manage inventory and food costs, and sustain a positive and productive kitchen culture.
The role offers an exceptional work-life balance with a set schedule from Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, with only occasional catering events. This schedule allows for a fulfilling leadership experience without compromising personal time outside of work. The Executive Chef will also have opportunities to cultivate creativity and innovation through exciting initiatives like Discovery Kitchen and annual Cookoffs, designed to engage students and staff alike.
This position is ideal for a self-starter with a high-energy approach and a collaborative mindset. Candidates should bring a strong background in culinary and kitchen management, a commitment to food safety and sanitation, and the ability to inspire a dedicated team. The role emphasizes continuous development through participation in departmental meetings, staff development programs, and professional growth opportunities.
In addition to a competitive salary range of $70,000 to $76,000, the position offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401K retirement plans; and paid time off. Chartwells K12 also provides various wellness programs, employee assistance, and other valuable resources to support overall associate well-being and professional success. This comprehensive package and supportive work culture make the Executive Chef role not only a career advancement opportunity but also a chance to be part of a mission-driven organization dedicated to making a positive difference in students' lives through quality school nutrition.
