Job Description
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is one of the most celebrated art institutions in the world, widely recognized for its influential and comprehensive collection of modern and contemporary art. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, MoMA not only offers visitors a chance to experience world-class art but also provides exceptional dining venues that complement the artistic journey. MoMA's dining offerings feature various venues including the Terrace Cafe on the sixth floor, which serves shareable plates, fresh salads, sandwiches, and desserts with breathtaking views of the city skyline. Additionally, the second-floor Cafe 2 offers a family-friendly environment where handmade pastas, artisanal cheeses, and kid-friendly classics are enjoyed at communal tables. These cafes emphasize a commitment to creating memorable experiences where food and art blend harmoniously.
The Executive Chef role at MoMA is an exciting opportunity to lead culinary operations in a distinguished cultural setting. This position is responsible for driving operational excellence and delivering an outstanding guest experience through exceptional food and hospitality. Reporting directly and collaborating with the General Manager and Food and Beverage Director, the Executive Chef plays a crucial role in setting and exceeding business goals, aligning with both MoMA's mission and the core values of the Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG). This role extends beyond typical kitchen leadership, requiring a commitment to Enlightened Hospitality—a philosophy that places care, creativity, and collaboration at the center of the hospitality experience.
As an ambassador for MoMA, the Executive Chef is tasked with creating and maintaining a culinary program that supports the museum's vision and values. The role demands strong leadership skills, a balance of friendliness and competitive spirit, and a deep passion for creating delicious food. The Executive Chef will build and mentor high-performing kitchen teams to ensure quality and hospitality excellence during service periods. The position involves coaching sous chefs, refining culinary programs to maintain industry-leading standards, and ensuring food preparation meets strict safety and quality metrics.
A key aspect of the role is fostering a positive, collaborative work environment by partnering with leadership teams throughout the museum. The Executive Chef also collaborates with various departments to integrate culinary efforts with current exhibitions, sustainability goals, and museum operations. The role requires clear communication, team development, and inclusive hiring practices that support diversity and belonging.
This full-time leadership opportunity offers competitive compensation in the range of $115,000 to $125,000 annually, with potential bonuses based on performance. Alongside financial rewards, the position offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous paid time off, parental leave, retirement savings plans with company matching, life insurance, mental health resources, dining credits, and discounted meals across USHG establishments.
Overall, the Executive Chef at MoMA works at the intersection of culinary arts and culture, contributing to an unparalleled guest experience in one of New York City's most iconic institutions. This role is ideal for an experienced culinary leader who values innovation, teamwork, and Enlightened Hospitality, with a desire to make a meaningful impact within a renowned museum setting.
