The Executive Chef role at Sunrise Senior Living is a critical leadership position responsible for managing all aspects of food production and presentation within the community’s dining services. This position requires a proactive and experienced culinary professional who excels at leading a diverse team, managing budgets, and maintaining high-quality standards in food safety and service. The Executive Chef oversees menu development, ensuring compliance with both community standards and regulatory requirements, including therapeutic and specialty diets. They play a key role in creating meal plans that are nutritious, appealing, and meet the needs of a senior population. In this role, the Executive Chef is also responsible for labor management, purchasing, food cost control, and financial oversight of the dining services department.
A major part of the role includes supervising, hiring, coaching, and mentoring dining services team members to foster a positive work environment and ensure excellent service delivery. The Executive Chef is expected to provide ongoing training related to food production, sanitation, and presentation to uphold industry best practices and Sunrise’s quality standards. They must also ensure compliance with the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system to maintain food safety and prevent contamination.
Additionally, the Executive Chef is actively involved in community engagement by interacting with residents during meal times to monitor satisfaction and address concerns, participating in resident counsel meetings, and coordinating special dining events that enhance the community experience. Financial responsibilities include assisting in budgeting, reviewing financial statements, and implementing corrective actions to meet financial goals.
The role demands strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills, as well as the ability to adapt to changing priorities and drive results. Job Requirements
- Certification and/or college degree in culinary arts
- minimum three years experience as a chef or kitchen manager
- two years supervisory and management experience including hiring, coaching, performance management, discipline, and counseling
- current Food Services Sanitation certificate
- ability to handle multiple priorities
- ability to delegate assignments based on skills and interests
- effective written and verbal communication skills
- proficiency in organizational and time management
- good judgment and decision-making skills
- proficiency in Microsoft Office and Sunrise applications
- knowledge of safety and regulatory compliance related to driving if applicable
- availability to work weekends, evenings, and flexible hours

Job Duties
- Lead overall food production, food presentation, menu development and planning, oversight and supervision of dining services team members and labor management
- develop menus to community and regulatory standards
- provide leadership in specialty areas of nutrition and therapeutic diets
- adhere to product order guide and primary vendor program
- ensure meals and serving portions meet Sunrise quality and industry standards
- provide methods for cost and portion control
- facilitate food production, presentation, and sanitation training
- monitor food quality achievement including timing, cooking methods, plating, and service delivery
- ensure HACCP compliance
- oversee special events food production and dining venues such as Bistro and Banquets
- review and maintain records for food and equipment temperature, cleaning checklists, and HACCP documentation
- promote customer engagement and monitor resident satisfaction
- assess residents' dietary needs and participate in Resident Counsel Meetings
- maintain confidentiality of resident information
- ensure community compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
- practice safety procedures including PPE and Lockout Tagout
- prevent food contamination and foodborne illness
- assist in budgeting and financial management
- manage department budget, labor, and expenses
- review financial statements and implement corrective actions
- manage recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, discipline, and mentoring of staff
- participate in training programs and maintain compliance with regulations
- hold team members accountable and conduct performance appraisals
- attend regular meetings related to operations and quality improvement
- stay updated on professional developments
- perform other duties as assigned
