Job Description
Located in East Lansing, Michigan, the College of Music at Michigan State University is a distinguished institution dedicated to fostering musical education, performance, and community engagement. As part of a prestigious university, the College of Music offers an enriching environment where students, faculty, and the community come together to celebrate and advance the art of music. Known for its comprehensive programs and vibrant public events, the College serves as a cultural hub within the university and the larger East Lansing area. Beyond its academic focus, the College is actively involved in public engagement through concerts, tours, open houses, and special events that highlight musical heritage and innovation.
This job opportunity is for an on-call or temporary support staff position within the College of Music, specifically focusing on assisting with public engagement activities related to the university's carillon. The role involves serving as an ambassador for the College by providing informative and welcoming experiences to visitors, prospective students, donors, alumni, and community members. Responsibilities include leading tours and assisting with open house events for the Carillon, a unique and historically significant musical instrument consisting of bells. The successful candidate will coordinate closely with the University Carillonneur to support scheduled events, ensuring smooth operations and memorable visitor interactions.
The position demands excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage diverse audiences and present accurate historical and programmatic information about the carillon. Candidates should bring a customer service-oriented mindset with the ability to represent the College and the University in a positive light. Physical stamina is essential as the role requires standing, walking, and conducting tours for extended periods. The work schedule is flexible and based on event needs, including occasional evenings and weekends, particularly during the summer. This employment type is either on-call or temporary, with the potential to work up to 1039 hours in any twelve-month period. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
Applicants are encouraged to have an awareness of the carillon as a musical instrument or a willingness to learn through provided training. The work environment fosters collaboration among College of Music staff, emphasizing reliability and adherence to schedules and instructions. This position represents a unique opportunity to be part of Michigan State University's vibrant music community, contributing to its outreach and educational mission by connecting audiences with the rich tradition and evolving role of the carillon.
