Job Description
Fresno's Chaffee Zoo Corporation (FCZC) is a prominent zoological institution dedicated to providing exceptional animal experiences and educational opportunities to its visitors. Known for its commitment to conservation, education, and community engagement, Fresno Chaffee Zoo has become a beloved destination for families and animal enthusiasts in the Fresno, California area. The Zoo is a nonprofit organization that values both its visitors and employees, aiming to foster an environment where wildlife conservation and guest satisfaction are paramount. With ongoing efforts to expand and enhance the visitor experience, FCZC continually hosts various events and special programs that promote the Zoo's mission and engage the local community.
The role of Events Set Up at Fresno Chaffee Zoo is an integral part of the Events department, functioning under the supervision of the Events Assistant Manager. This seasonal part-time position, lasting from August 2026 to January 2027, plays a critical role in ensuring the success of Zoo events through meticulous set-up and breakdown duties. Offering hourly pay in the range of $17.78 to $18.66 based on experience, the role also provides valuable benefits including an Employee Assistance Program, 401K, and paid California Sick Time.
The Events Set Up position demands a dynamic individual who is capable of performing a diverse range of tasks that contribute to the achievement of FCZC’s strategic goals. The incumbent will be responsible for the physical arrangement and preparation of event spaces which include setting up tables, chairs, lighting, and other equipment necessary for both in-Zoo events and off-site seasonal exhibitions. Accuracy and adherence to safety protocols are crucial, as the role requires using good judgment during lifting and moving heavy items and potentially operating heavy machinery such as forklifts, telehandlers, and scissor lifts.
Beyond the physical setup, this role emphasizes exceptional customer service. During events, the Events Set Up professional interacts directly with guests, answering questions, resolving issues, and assisting event coordination efforts. This contribution is essential in ensuring that events run smoothly while maintaining a welcoming and professional atmosphere aligned with the Zoo’s mission and vision. The position often involves teamwork and coordination with management, vendors, and other Zoo staff to meet event deadlines with efficiency and attention to detail.
Physical fitness is a significant component of this job, as it entails standing or walking up to 5 to 10 miles per shift across varying terrains, frequently lifting heavy items up to 75 pounds, and working at heights using ladders or approved equipment. The work environment is both indoor and outdoor and may expose the employee to diverse weather conditions and Zoo-related environmental factors such as dust and proximity to animals. Staff members must be prepared for occasional local or out-of-town travel and flexible work hours—including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays, making this an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about events and animal conservation.
In summary, the Events Set Up role at Fresno Chaffee Zoo Corporation offers a rewarding seasonal opportunity for individuals who enjoy hands-on physical work, customer service, and contributing to memorable events in a unique zoological setting. Candidates should expect to engage in a variety of tasks that not only support events’ operational success but also enrich the visitor experience at one of California’s most cherished cultural institutions.
