Job Description
The City of Tempe is a vibrant and dynamic municipality located in the heart of Arizona's Valley of the Sun. Known for its rich cultural heritage and commitment to community engagement, Tempe offers a thriving arts scene that enriches the lives of its residents and visitors alike. The Arts & Culture Division, a key department within the city administration, is dedicated to promoting accessible, diverse, and high-quality arts programming across the community. This division fosters creativity, supports local artists, and strengthens community bonds through innovative cultural initiatives and events. The division operates from the Edna Vihel Arts Center, a hub for artistic collaboration and cultural education.
The Events Coordinator position is a pivotal role within the Community Arts team of the Arts & Culture Division. This role focuses on coordinating music-related initiatives, residencies, and events held in various locations throughout Tempe, such as public facilities and neighborhood parks. The Events Coordinator is responsible for recruiting and supervising event staff, managing contracts, and collaborating extensively with artists, schools, arts organizations, and other city departments to facilitate engaging and accessible programming for diverse audiences. Programs under this role include major community music events like Tempe Playlist, Music under the Stars, and Tempe Jam, each offering unique cultural experiences that highlight local talent and foster community interaction.
The Events Coordinator’s duties encompass a broad range of responsibilities aimed at delivering exceptional arts experiences. This includes planning and implementing specialized arts programming while ensuring artist engagement, supporting program sustainability by tracking revenue sources, fees, and sponsorships, and managing partnerships with artists, vendors, and program collaborators. Ensuring the safety, accessibility, and quality of events is paramount, including coordinating technical, production, patron, and facility needs while maintaining compliance with safety and accessibility standards. The role also provides expertise on division programs and services by assessing community needs and desires to guide programming decisions.
In addition to program and event coordination, the Events Coordinator oversees the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of event staff, offering coaching and mentoring to support team success. The position acts as a liaison between the Arts & Culture Division and various stakeholders, responding to inquiries, building partnerships to expand access and participation, and ensuring effective communication within the community. Administrative responsibilities include managing budgets, purchasing, contract administration, reporting, and expense monitoring, as well as contributing to marketing efforts through the creation of press releases, flyers, and digital communications.
This full-time role is integral to the cultural vitality of Tempe, requiring an individual with strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for community arts. The Events Coordinator not only facilitates memorable music events but also plays a vital role in sustaining the city’s cultural ecosystem by fostering collaboration, accessibility, and artistic innovation.
