Job Description

The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) is a prominent cultural institution dedicated to preserving and sharing the diverse stories of South Carolina. As a museum that celebrates the rich natural history, cultural diversity, innovative spirit, and artistic creativity of the state, the SCSM offers a wide range of permanent collections, educational programs, exhibitions, and digital resources to engage visitors of all ages. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, the museum serves as a vital community resource that fosters learning and appreciation for the heritage and development of South Carolina through its multifaceted offerings. The South Carolina State Museum is widely recognized for its commitment to education, preservation, and community engagement, making it a cornerstone institution for residents and visitors interested in the culture and history of the region.

The Event Support Associate role at the South Carolina State Museum is a dynamic position essential to the successful execution of a wide variety of events held at the museum’s facilities. The associate is responsible for preparing event spaces, maintaining cleanliness, and providing operational support during and after events to ensure a seamless experience for all attendees. This position requires a hands-on approach to event setup, including arranging tables, chairs, linens, staging, and equipment following detailed event diagrams and specifications. The Event Support Associate also plays a critical role in maintaining the safety of museum exhibits and the cleanliness of event areas throughout each function.

Beyond setting up and breaking down event spaces, the associate ensures that all areas meet the museum’s standards for cleanliness and organization before, during, and after events. Duties include collecting and disposing of trash and recycling, resetting spaces for subsequent events, and maintaining order in storage, preparation, and loading areas. The role demands collaboration with museum staff, event coordinators, and external vendors to support diverse events, including weddings, corporate functions, and public programs. This position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive movements for extended periods, often during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Candidates for this role must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and a strong ability to work as part of a team. The Event Support Associate contributes significantly to the overall visitor experience by ensuring event operations run smoothly while protecting the museum’s property and exhibits. This position is event-based, with variable hours aligned with the museum’s event calendar, emphasizing the need for flexibility in scheduling. Working at SCSM offers the opportunity to be part of a dedicated team that supports cultural enrichment and community engagement in South Carolina through a variety of memorable events and educational experiences.
