Job Description
The USS Midway Museum, located in San Diego, California, is an iconic naval museum and one of the most popular event venues in the region. This historic aircraft carrier, permanently docked in downtown San Diego, offers visitors and guests a unique experience with its rich maritime history and panoramic views of the city harbor. The USS Midway Museum hosts more than 700 private and active-duty Navy events annually. Its unparalleled downtown location near the convention center, combined with the ability to accommodate events for up to 3,500 guests, makes it a sought-after venue for a variety of occasions. The museum is committed to providing a memorable and distinctive experience for both public visitors and private event clients through its exceptional service, collaborative culture, and respect for volunteer contributions.
The USS Midway Museum is currently seeking an Event Sales and Service Manager to join its dynamic team. This full-time role offers an hourly pay range of $28.00 - $32.00, with compensation dependent on the candidate's knowledge, education, experience, and internal equity. The Event Sales and Service Manager will play a critical role in the successful selling, planning, and management of assigned event leads and repeat event functions, particularly for groups ranging between 250 and 800 attendees. The position requires a highly collaborative, customer-focused individual who enjoys problem-solving and is passionate about delivering outstanding client experiences.
The chosen candidate will be part of a relatively young and small organization that values a balanced work-life environment, opportunities for professional ownership, and visible achievement of results. This role demands a proactive professional who can effectively convert inquiries into booked events, maximize revenue through strategic upselling, and maintain strong client relationships. The manager will ensure detailed and accurate event documentation, coordinate communication between clients and internal departments, and help foster a positive, team-oriented culture emphasizing safety, fun, teamwork, ownership, and work-life balance.
Key success factors for the role include consistent revenue growth, exceptional client service, and effective cross-department collaboration. The manager will be responsible for ensuring that all event logistics—from space and equipment needs to beverage menus and thematic decorations—are thoroughly planned and flawlessly executed. Responsibilities also extend to providing timely and professional communication with clients, participating in promotional and networking activities to maintain high visibility, and performing special projects as assigned.
This position requires a minimum of two years' experience in event sales and operations, along with a thorough understanding of hospitality and event planning best practices. Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with event reservation and diagram software is desired. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills are essential, complemented by the ability to work independently and under pressure while maintaining composure and excellent attention to detail. Working aboard the aircraft carrier entails adapting to varied indoor and outdoor weather conditions, with physical demands including long periods of sitting, climbing stairs or ladders, and occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
The USS Midway Museum is an equal opportunity employer, welcoming diversity and committed to providing reasonable accommodations as required by law. The museum fosters an inclusive environment where employees can thrive professionally while contributing to a meaningful and engaging mission that celebrates naval history and community involvement.
