The Recreation Specialist (Seasonal) position within the Bernalillo County Cultural Affairs and Marketing Department is a pivotal role focused on organizing, leading, and promoting recreational activities designed to engage community members of all ages and abilities. Located at 415 Silver Ave SW, this seasonal role offers a competitive pay range of $18.60 to $26.50 per hour, providing an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in recreation and community services to gain valuable experience while making a meaningful impact. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for supervising recreational sports and activities, assisting in the development and execution of programs that cater to diverse participants, including those with disabilities. The ideal candidate for this role will have experience working with various age groups and individuals with different physical and mental abilities, demonstrating adaptability and compassion. Responsibilities include supervising Recreation Assistants, supporting inclusion participants, managing schedules and facility usage, maintaining records and reports, and assisting with budgetary and administrative tasks. The position requires participation in skills training such as basic first aid, CPR, and AED to ensure safety during all programs. The Recreation Specialist will also be entrusted with sensitive and confidential information, underscoring the need for professionalism and discretion.

Working conditions involve both indoor (60%) and outdoor (40%) environments, with exposure to varying weather and physical surfaces such as sand, gravel, grass, wood floors, and tile. The role may require driving multi-passenger vehicles to transport program participants and demands flexibility to work variable hours. With a foundation of teamwork and shared goals, the Recreation Specialist plays a critical role in promoting social inclusion, physical activity, and community involvement throughout Bernalillo County, supporting the County's mission to build a high quality of life for all residents.

Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation
  • Adherence to all County safety guidelines
  • Complete all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position
  • Complete required supervisor training, if applicable
  • Will receive skills training in basic first aid and CPR

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience in the recreation field working with various age groups and individuals with variable physical and mental abilities
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered

Job Duties

  • Organizes and supervises recreational sports and activities at assigned locations
  • Assists in developing, scheduling, and implementing recreational programs that meet the needs and interests of various age groups and participants with variable physical capabilities
  • Observes clients physical, social and behavioral status and participation in activities and relays progress reports to manager and other staff members
  • Provides support to participants with disabilities, based on assigned accommodation plans and sound inclusion practices
  • Assists inclusion participants with activities and with identified accommodations needed
  • utilizes appropriate techniques to motivate and encourage client participation
  • Works in conjunction with other program staff
  • supervises inclusion participants ensuring their safety, social inclusion and accommodation
  • Provides recommendations to supervisor for program changes and innovation
  • Responsible for enforcing rules of a community facility and/or program
  • Schedules activities and arranges for use of a recreational facility in cooperation with assigned supervisor
  • Assists with some maintenance duties as necessary
  • Prepares statistical and participant progress reports as needed
  • Assists in budget preparation, planning, purchasing, and administrative duties, record keeping, and tracking attendance of program participants
  • Performs clerical duties as required
  • Transports program participants in multi-passenger vehicles as needed
  • May handle sensitive and/or confidential records, plans, documents or decisions that require maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
