Job Description

Bernardus Lodge & Spa is a premier luxury hotel and spa located on the scenic Monterey Peninsula. The available role is a key leadership position within the Catering Department of Bernardus Lodge & Spa. The individual hired will play a pivotal role in soliciting and selling catering events while managing key accounts to sustain and grow the lodge's reputation as the premier destination for social and corporate events in the region. This position includes providing strategic guidance and leadership to the Catering Managers and Catering Administrative Assistant, helping shape a customer-focused, dedicated events team that aligns with the lodge's brand and business objectives. The role requires managing catering revenues by developing innovative approaches for new business while nurturing existing client and vendor relationships.

The Catering Director will regularly report to the Director of Sales & Marketing about the status of catering operations and revenue performance. Collaboration with the Director of Sales & Marketing is crucial for crafting pricing policies, contract terms, and improving departmental procedures to ensure ongoing business success. Duties include overseeing the distribution of conferences and events across the catering team, continuous coaching and development of staff, and acting as the primary point of contact for catering-related client inquiries and contractual matters.

This role demands a proactive individual capable of creating and executing various sales strategies, including participation in wedding fairs, sales blitzes, and community events to drive new and repeat revenues. Furthermore, the position entails managing event logistics, from client proposals, contract negotiations, conducting site tours, to coordinating with multiple departments within the hotel to guarantee flawless execution of events. The Catering Director is also responsible for maximizing both resort and catering revenues through effective upselling and coordination with the Banquet and Reservations departments.

Ideal candidates will bring experience in luxury hotel or resort environments with strong interpersonal and communication skills, advanced knowledge of software applications, and a proven track record in managing events and teams. Flexibility is required to manage varied work hours that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Job Requirements

  • Minimum two years guest relations, revenue and yield management experience in luxury hotel or resort environment
  • Valid documents to work in the US
  • Meet legal age requirements for the position
  • Ability to work varied schedules including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Valid California Driver License
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally
  • Food Handler Certificate requested
  • TIPs certificate requested

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum two years guest relations, revenue and yield management experience in luxury hotel or resort environment
  • Professional with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Windows-based programs
  • Delphi, Opera, and Sabre/SynXis experience preferred
  • Valid work authorization for the US
  • Meet legal age requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality or related field preferred
  • Experience training and managing catering staff
  • Ability to read, interpret, and write reports and correspondence
  • Proficient in calculating financial figures and percentages
  • Advanced skills in Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Internet Explorer
  • Knowledge of Delphi is a plus

Job Duties

  • Report to the Director of Sales & Marketing on catering business status and revenue
  • Help create and cultivate a customer-focused event and conference team
  • Review pricing, structure, and contract language with Director of Sales & Marketing
  • Review and suggest changes to catering department procedures and policies
  • Manage and assign events to appropriate team members
  • Provide ongoing training and coaching to Catering Managers and Administrative Assistant
  • Act as main point of contact for client or contractual questions
  • Assist in setting department budget and sales goals
  • Create and implement sales strategies including wedding fairs and community events
  • Assist Catering Managers with contract negotiation and client service
  • Actively solicit banquet business from viable sources
  • Attend trade association events to network and learn new trends
  • Host targeted groups of planners and conduct site tours
  • Produce proposals, estimates and event information
  • Negotiate wedding and social event contracts and guestroom contracts
  • Communicate group details and documentation
  • Develop and maintain client and vendor relationships
  • Conduct pre-event briefings and pre-con meetings
  • Arrange group activities, decor, transportation, and vendor coordination
  • Maximize revenue through upselling and coordination with hotel departments
  • Reach or exceed revenue and sales goals
  • Coordinate with Banquet Manager and Reservations Department
  • Review billing and ensure timely final client billing
  • Support a safe working environment and comply with attendance and conduct policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
