Job Requirements

  • College degree in event planning, hospitality, communications, or related fields
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in event planning
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and in fast-paced environments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and lead projects
  • Travel availability up to 20 percent
  • Prefer certified meeting professional or certified special events professional designation
  • Project management certification is a plus
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel is desired.

Job Qualifications

  • College degree in Event Planning, Hospitality, Communications, or related fields
  • 5 plus years applicable experience in event planning
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to successfully meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high pressure environment while demonstrating superior poise, critical thinking skills and excellent judgement
  • Ability to work independently and provide leadership on assigned programs from planning through completion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to present to senior leadership and influence decision making
  • Travel required less than 20 percent
  • Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) or Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP) designation strongly preferred
  • Project management certification preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills preferred.

Job Duties

  • Act as a strategic consultant for event sponsors by collaborating on development of event goals, objectives and return on investment and providing feedback on content, agenda, and program details to optimize outcomes
  • Consult with business sponsors and employees to ensure events reflect Thrivent's purpose and values
  • Demonstrate project management and organizational skills to successfully manage assigned events and meetings including venue selection, negotiations, contract revisions, agendas, all logistic planning such as transportation, room blocks, meeting room set up, AV/production, food and beverage, and dietary restrictions
  • Determine and recommend resource requirements and budgets and aggressively manage to the approved event budget including attrition, deposit schedules, and final reconciliation
  • Apply Strategic Meeting Management (SMM) principles including enterprise-wide visibility to meeting volume, capturing and reporting event spend, cost avoidance, risk management, and ROI
  • Ensure compliance with applicable tax laws through accurate reporting
  • Lead the strategic sourcing process including defining event venue/vendor requirements, developing requests for proposal, managing responses and facilitating vendor selection and post-contract relationship management
  • Negotiate contracts and manage vendors including hotels, caterers, AV, décor, and marketing materials
  • Oversee group air travel and ticketing, ensuring compliance with travel policy
  • Research, identify, and select appropriate event speakers and entertainment and manage contract riders and onsite handling
  • Partner with attendee experience team to manage event websites, registration including on-site, production of event materials, and internal/external event performance surveys
  • Supervise on-site meeting/conference staff and act as main point of contact during events
  • Introduce innovation and improvement to existing or new events and programs
  • Embrace continuous improvement through survey results, industry involvement, benchmarking, research, and feedback
  • Participate in national event related associations.
