Job Description

Syracuse University is a distinguished private international research university with a rich history dating back over 150 years. Located in the geographic heart of New York State, the university boasts a diverse academic environment offering more than 200 majors, 100 minors, and approximately 200 advanced degree programs across 13 schools and colleges. With over 15,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students, Syracuse University embraces a broad spectrum of backgrounds, cultures, and academic pursuits. The institution carries a strong commitment to delivering an exceptional student experience through vibrant, engaged campus communities, fostering collaboration, mentorship, and spontaneous connection among students, staff, and faculty.

The city of Syracuse, NY, serves as a dynamic backdrop for this university, offering a blend of social, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Known for its medium-sized population and low cost of living, this city is enriched with parks, museums, professional theaters, festivals, and premier shopping venues. Syracuse is also noted for its broad array of seasonal activities, including water skiing, snow skiing, hiking, wine tours, and biking along historic trails. These amenities complement the academic experience, ensuring a well-rounded lifestyle for university members.

The Event and Technical Services Coordinator role is a vital staff position within the Student Experience department, specifically the Event and Technical Services (ETS) unit. This full-time, non-exempt role, scheduled primarily from Tuesday through Saturday from 2 PM to 10 PM with evening and weekend work required, is based on the Syracuse campus and requires an on-campus presence to support student engagement and event facilitation. The position pays between $21.63 and $22.50 per hour, with pay rates determined by the candidate’s education, experience, competencies, and internal and external benchmarks.

This role administers services, programs, and staffing within the ETS unit, focusing on providing technical support and production for events organized by Student Engagement. The coordinator oversees critical building operations and event services, including the design, installation, engineering, and operation of lighting and sound reinforcement systems. Responsible for developing service strategies, the coordinator ensures that technical support aligns with university needs, enhances the visibility and success of events, and positively impacts the department’s financial standing.

Primary responsibilities include facilitating building services and event operations, supervising student staff through hiring, scheduling, training, and performance reviews, and delivering expert management of lighting, sound, and video equipment. The coordinator produces video recordings and live broadcasts, manages equipment maintenance, and ensures strict compliance with safety and environmental health protocols. Advising event organizers on technical requirements, advancing events through coordination with artists, and managing logistics such as outside equipment rentals are essential functions. The coordinator also shares responsibility for Student Experience Box Office operations, supporting event management and communication with users.

Candidates for this position should possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience, preferably with supervisory background and professional experience in lighting, sound, or video production. The role requires the ability to work at significant heights and a valid driver’s license. Proficiency in live audio engineering, theatrical lighting, video production, Adobe Premiere, and essential software platforms is necessary to excel in this technically demanding and dynamic position.

Syracuse University values diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing equal opportunity employment and fostering a welcoming and respectful community. The university supports veterans and military-connected individuals through dedicated programs, reinforcing its commitment to serving a broad and diverse workforce. The position supports the university's mission to prepare students for global engagement by ensuring a supportive and well-managed technical infrastructure for campus events and activities.
