Job Description
The City of Salem, Oregon's capital and the second largest city in the state, is proud to offer an enriching and meaningful opportunity for individuals passionate about community service and senior engagement. Salem, with its rich history, diverse population of nearly 180,000 residents, and family-friendly environment, is committed to enhancing the quality of life for all its citizens. The municipal government comprises eight primary departments, including Community Services, which plays a vital role in delivering programs and services that support the community's health and well-being. The City of Salem's workforce of approximately 1,350 dedicated employees collaborates closely with labor unions to ensure effective, inclusive service delivery. This commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion fosters a vibrant workplace culture that values new ideas and collective learning, helping the city to serve its residents better.
Within this dynamic environment, the City of Salem is currently seeking a part-time Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator for its Center 50+ facility. This position is especially designed for individuals who enjoy working with older adults and are eager to contribute to a community space tailored to their interests and needs. The Center 50+ serves as a hub for senior recreational programs, acting as a gathering place where the city's senior population can participate in various activities, socialize, and maintain an active lifestyle. The Recreation Coordinator's role is central to fostering a welcoming atmosphere and delivering high-quality program experiences during evening and weekend hours.
In this role, the coordinator will be responsible for supporting a broad range of recreational programs, both at the Center 50+ facility and at off-site locations such as local parks and partner agencies. The position involves diverse duties, including overseeing evening and weekend operations, ensuring the security of the facility, assisting patrons, instructors, and volunteers, and supporting special events and programming initiatives. With a focus on leadership and coordination, this role allows for the development and implementation of innovative programming that meets the unique needs of the older adult community.
The position offers a part-time schedule with a maximum of 1,200 work hours per calendar year, with work shifts varying across weekdays and Saturdays. Compensation ranges from $20.45 to $26.09 per hour, providing a competitive wage for those committed to making a meaningful community impact. Alongside the opportunity to contribute to Salem's vibrant senior community, employees enjoy benefits such as paid sick time and the chance to work within a supportive and enjoyable team environment.
Applicants should possess strong leadership abilities, with four years or more of advanced leadership or instructional experience or specialized education or certification in fields related to recreation, education, sports, gerontology, or similar areas. Candidates will enhance their skills in program implementation, customer service, and operational support through hands-on experience and collaboration with seasoned staff. This position requires candidates to meet specific requirements, including passing background checks, holding a valid Oregon driver's license, and demonstrating a clean driving record.
Overall, the Evening and Weekend Recreation Coordinator role is an excellent opportunity for those motivated to contribute to community wellness, support senior citizens, and grow professionally within a municipal government setting. The City of Salem invites individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply, encouraging inclusivity and representation throughout its workforce.
