The role available at UTMB Health is for an Emergency Room (ER) Technician who provides intermediate technical assistance and supportive patient care within the Emergency Department. This position is crucial in supporting nurses and physicians by attending to patient needs, assisting with clinical procedures, and ensuring a safe and clean environment. The ER Technician plays a vital role in collecting patient data, performing vital signs, and aiding in patient hygiene and mobility, thereby enhancing the overall patient experience. The ideal candidate will have technical training such as EMT completion, active EMS certification, or recognized military medical training. Responsibilities include specimen collection, assisting with Point of Care Testing, preparing patients for examinations, and participating in quality improvements. Job Requirements

  • Completion of one technical program and one year related experience
  • completion of EMT program, enrollment in nursing school with specified coursework, active EMS certification, or recognized military medical training
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association
  • ability to complete ER Tech CBO Tool within six months
  • physical ability to perform patient care duties
  • adherence to patient privacy and safety policies

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of EMT program or enrollment in recognized nursing school with completed first semester including clinical concepts and health assessments
  • active state EMS certification in good standing or recognized military medical training as US Army medic, Navy Corpsman, Air Force Medic, or Coast Guard Corpsman
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association
  • ability to complete ER Tech CBO Tool within six months of employment
  • strong communication and teamwork skills
  • knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control measures

Job Duties

  • Collects, reports and documents data
  • takes vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and collects specimens
  • performs and reports Point of Care Testing
  • assists with patient activities and care as assigned by charge nurse or designee
  • provides for patients' personal hygiene including bathing, oral suctioning and superficial wound care
  • assists with elimination and cares for incontinent patients and those with urinary catheters
  • provides ostomy care
  • assists with patient feeding
  • ambulates, positions, and turns patients
  • assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
  • prepares patients and chaperones during examinations and procedures
  • ensures patient safety related to age and condition
  • assists with patient restraints and maintains precautions
  • cares for patients from correctional environments
  • maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
  • provides and maintains a clean, safe environment
  • performs or assists with aseptic techniques, isolation procedures, and infection control
  • communicates with nurses and multidisciplinary teams
  • notifies charge nurse and staff of equipment issues
  • maintains patient care supplies
  • assists with patient requests for hospital services
  • sets up labor and delivery tables for ER deliveries
  • supports minor operating procedures and diagnostic procedures
  • participates in quality improvement activities
  • practices cost containment
