Job Description
The Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in Charleston, South Carolina, is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services to our nation's veterans and their families. Our facility emphasizes an environment conducive to healing, safety, and comfort. We are a government-operated healthcare institution focused on serving veterans by delivering a wide range of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services. We pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and operational efficiency to support the optimal patient care experience. The Environmental Management Services Division plays a critical role in this mission by ensuring that all areas of the medical center meet stringent cleanliness and sanitation standards.
This position, Housekeeping Aid (HKA) - Environmental Services (EVS) Technician, is a key member of our Environmental Management Services team. Under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or their designee, the role involves performing essential custodial and janitorial services that contribute directly to the health and safety of veterans and their families who utilize the medical center. The job requires thorough attention to detail and diligence, as cleanliness and sanitation in healthcare settings are vital for controlling infections and providing a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
As a HKA-EVS Technician, you will engage in a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties. Your responsibilities will span multiple areas including wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and storerooms. Specific tasks include sweeping, mopping, machine scrubbing floors, vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture, emptying waste baskets, dusting surfaces such as light globes and Venetian blinds, and washing walls, windows, and ceilings. You will also be responsible for replenishing restroom supplies like toilet tissue and towel dispensers, and you may be required to move furniture to facilitate cleaning processes. The work often involves climbing small ladders and handling cleaning equipment with minimal supervision.
This full-time position offers a structured work schedule that includes varying shifts and may require working nights and weekends. It is a permanent role with a pay scale ranging from $18.35 to $21.40 per hour, classified under the WG-2 pay grade, with no promotion potential. Relocation or recruitment incentives are not authorized for this role. The job is based on-site at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, providing stability and consistency for those committed to federal service and veteran care.
Candidates accepted for this role must meet specific federal employment eligibility criteria, including U.S. citizenship, successful completion of a background investigation, and compliance with selective service registration requirements where applicable. Drug testing is also a prerequisite. The position is non-sensitive and low risk, ensuring accessibility while maintaining necessary security standards.
Working at the VA Medical Center affords you the opportunity to join a team where the majority of staff are veterans themselves, fostering a shared commitment to serving those who have served our country. Beyond cleaning duties, you contribute to the overall well-being and safety of our veterans by supporting an environment that is hygienic and accommodating. This role is crucial in supporting the mission of the VA to honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.
The VA is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and this role welcomes applicants from all backgrounds who share a dedication to public service and high standards of cleanliness. Federal employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package designed to promote a rewarding career, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. This position represents a meaningful career opportunity for individuals passionate about cleanliness, safety, and contributing to the well-being of veterans.
