The Environmental Field Chemist (CleanPack Chemist) role at Clean Harbors in Linden is a hands-on, customer-facing position responsible for handling, segregating, packing, and inspecting chemical waste to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations as well as internal company policies and procedures. This role requires working both indoors and outdoors at various customer sites, including plants, labs, and households hazardous waste collection centers. Candidates in this role assist with lab packs within customer facilities, manage hazardous waste, and ensure proper packaging and documentation for safe disposal. This is not a laboratory-based position but involves active fieldwork and direct interaction with customers daily.

This role is an entry-level position that offers a pathway into an exciting and rewarding career with Clean Harbors. The position provides significant opportunities for advancement, with many middle and senior management staff having started their careers in this role. It is also well suited for transitioning military professionals seeking to leverage their skills in a new civilian career path. Employees receive accelerated training to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success. After approximately 18 to 36 months, candidates have the opportunity to move into salary management positions across any of Clean Harbors’ 200+ branch locations with the option for internal transfers. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform physical job functions
  • Ability to pass background check, drug test, and physical examination
  • Compliance with OSHA respiratory protection facial hair standard
  • Willingness to obtain CDL Class B with hazmat and tanker endorsements within 6 months of employment
  • Strong customer service skills

  • Previous experience in environmental services such as remediation, abatement, or emergency spill response preferred

Job Duties

  • Ensure health and safety compliance by following all safe work practices, policies, and processes
  • Prepare computer-generated packing lists, labels, manifests, and land disposal restriction notifications
  • Perform inspections of staging, accumulating, and storage areas for housekeeping and compliance
  • Inspect storage areas and drums for leaks or spills
  • Check drums for labeling regulation compliance
  • Collect, segregate, and properly package chemical waste for disposal
  • Execute jobs at customer locations including Fortune 500 companies
  • Prepare and approve projects before shipment according to OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company policies
  • Conduct projects according to site-specific Federal, State, and local regulations and health and safety plans
  • Understand customer-specific disposal restrictions and special packaging requirements
  • Sample and profile new waste streams requiring analytical testing
  • Ensure correct drum count and shippable condition
  • Follow all local, state, and federal compliance regulations
  • Safely operate vehicles in accordance with DOT and other regulatory requirements
  • Observe all corporate operating guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned
