Job Description
Performance Foodservice, a subdivision of Performance Food Group (PFG), is a leading broadline foodservice distributor dedicated to providing an extensive range of products to a diverse client base. This client base includes independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. Performance Foodservice prides itself on building close customer relationships through teams of knowledgeable sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and other experts. Their comprehensive approach supports customers by advising on operational improvements, menu development, product selection, and strategic operational enhancements. This commitment ensures that Performance Foodservice is not only a provider of quality food products but also a partner invested in helping independent restaurant owners and food service operators realize their business goals and dreams.
The company has a strong emphasis on maintaining safe and inclusive working environments, fostering a culture centered on rewards, recognition, and respect. Performance Foodservice also offers competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, including health and wellness benefits starting from day one, an employee stock purchase plan, employer-matched 401(k) plans, education assistance, paid time off, and more. Employees are supported in their professional development with opportunities for career growth, especially in roles critical to supporting America’s food distribution system.
The Entry Level Driver Trainee position at Performance Foodservice is designed for individuals beginning their careers in commercial driving within the foodservice distribution industry. This role offers a $10,000 sign-on bonus under certain terms and entails delivery route shifts early in the morning from 3 am to 5 am on specified weekdays, with employees returning home daily. The average annual salary for this role is approximately $73,000, reflecting the importance and responsibility of the duties performed.
In this role, drivers are trained to safely and efficiently operate tractor-trailers or straight trucks on intrastate and interstate routes, including local deliveries, over-the-road (OTR) journeys, shuttle services, and overnight routes. The primary responsibility is to deliver and unload food and food-related products to a variety of customers, ensuring compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies. Drivers are expected to perform vehicle inspections, secure freight properly, and maintain detailed records such as logs for hours of service, which are crucial for regulatory compliance.
Communication and professionalism are fundamental, as drivers interact regularly with customers, vendors, and colleagues. The role is a combination of hands-on driving skills and customer service, demanding thoroughness in documenting deliveries, handling cash or checks when necessary, verifying delivery accuracy, and managing returned or damaged goods according to company policies.
Trainees participate in a rigorous Entry Level Driver or Dock to Driver Training Program that includes practical ride-along experiences and safety protocol training. Throughout the training and beyond, drivers must diligently follow all safety standards, complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and orderly work environment. The role supports the broader mission of Performance Foodservice by ensuring timely and dependable delivery services that allow clients to operate smoothly and meet consumer demand.
